BOARD
from A1
cluded comments from cur-
rent Latham staff members and
parents about the future of the
school.
“Th e following report pres-
ents all of the relevant informa-
tion and data necessary to help
make an informed decision
on the future of Latham Ele-
mentary School,” read the in-
troduction of the report. “Th e
report does not give recom-
mendations or make any sort
of conclusions. Rather it pres-
ents facts, data and feedback
from staff and parents that can
serve as a guide and reference
in making a decision.”
Th e fi nal decision regarding
Latham’s future is still planned
for the January board meeting
for the local Community Can-
cer Center.
Normally, Douglas Coun-
ty deputies adhere to strict
grooming standards, which
in-clude limitations on facial
hair. Sheriff Hanlin temporar-
ily relaxed the facial hair stan-
dard in the name of communi-
ty service and the department
received astonishing support
from the staff , members of the
community and the Winston
Police Department.
“Th e amount raised is not
being disclosed at this time,
but we are excited about the re-
sults,” said Hanlin.
with additional discussion tak-
ing place at a special session
meeting on December 17. At
the December 17 meeting, the
board will be discussing the
contents of the report and re-
sponding from questions from
Latham parents.
“Today was all about pre-
senting the data, best we could.
Getting questions in front of
the board. Get more informa-
tion, come back, hopefully get
more input – we have a lot of
input from the Latham com-
munity but more from them,”
said Sullivan. “Again, this is
going to be a hard decision
whatever (the board does). So,
I want to make sure they re-
ally have some time to think
through it and be thoughtful.”
On Monday, the board
members asked questions as
the information was presented
to them but gave no real indi-
cation on their leanings of how
they would vote when the time
comes.
“I came away feeling much
more confi dent about the kind
of decision we would like to
make. We have the facts that,
whichever way we choose to
go, we know how to get there,”
said board chair Alan Baas.
Baas also noted that the ad-
dition of the comments from
the Latham community gave
a fresh perspective on the de-
cision.
“It gave me much more sol-
id – I felt like I was walking in
all your moccasins because I
got so many hits on how your
experience in the school and
how it’s important to you,” said
Baas.
Aft er the meeting, Sullivan
noted he was pleased with how
this document displayed the
realities of Latham and how it
sets up the board for their de-
cision.
“Anytime you close a school
there’s the emotional piece –
the value that the community
puts in the school. Th ere is the
budget piece. Th ere’s all sorts of
things and it’s never real clear
or an easy decision,” he said.
“I’ve been through a number
of building closures in Eugene
and others. Th ere’s never real-
ly just one thing that moves a
board. I wouldn’t be surprised
either way with what the board
does.”
