SMITH—Don and Dar-
lene Smith will celebrate 62
years of marriage on Satur-
day, Dec. 8.
Th e couple has lived in
Cottage Grove their entire
lives. Don was a logger be-
fore owning his own busi-
nesses, including a barber
shop in Creswell he even-
tually sold to his daughter,
who still runs Whistle Stop
Barber today.
Darlene was a homemak-
er before returning to work
at a local bank and eventu-
ally graduating from beauty
school at age 59, working
with her daughter at Whistle
Stop Barber.
She has since retired.

not appreciate the manner
in which the man spoke
to him. Advised that if the
man talks to him again he
will “put him in his place.”
• Seven bags of soda cans
reported stolen on Landess

• Barking dog reported
on Curry Ave.
• Unlawful camping re-
ported by a business on
Gateway Blvd.
• A woman was denied an
account at the bank and re-
portedly damaged the door
on the way out.
Nov. 29
• Unlawful camping re-
ported on Gateway Blvd.
• Complaint of loud bass
music coming from a res-
idence on S. Eighth Street
reported.
• A man on a bike with an
umbrella was reported as
stealing things out of peo-
ple’s yards on Harrison Ave.
Dec. 1
• A man wearing a hos-
pital bracelet was reported
being confrontational with
employees in Walmart ac-
cusing them of calling him
“the ‘n word.’”
• A transient male was re-
ported sleeping in a sleep-
ing bag on the sidewalk
near Gateway Blvd.
Dec. 2
• A man in a gray Volk-
swagen was reported as
sitting in the driveway “for
a while” yelling at himself,
“seemingly in distress.”
• A man reported a wom-
an blocking him from en-
tering his driveway and
ripping the side mirror off
his car.
• Report received of a
truck parking in the lines
of a handicap parking space
making it diffi cult for a
woman to enter her car.
• A white Eclipse convert-
ible with unknown plates
was reported “doing do-
nuts” in the cemetery.
• A man at Jaspers on
Gateway Blvd. was report-
ed as groping and grabbing
another customer.
Carl “Mark” Robert Markham, Jr. of
Cottage Grove, OR died on November 16,
2018 at the age of 88. He was born on July
19, 1930 in Detroit, MI, to parents Carl and
Ruth (Waldo) Markham.
He joined the United States Navy in
1947, was Honorably Discharged in 1967. He was in the Fleet Re-
serve until 1977, 22 years on a diesel submarine. He served in the
Asiatic Pacifi c, and during WWII in Korea and Vietnam. He was a
California Game Warden/1963 Deputy of Fish and Game. For a time
he built houses. He was also a Logger, Colorado Hunting Guide, and
Rescue Diver. He was owner/operator of Planer Technical Service
and a world renowned planerman. Mark enjoyed gardening, food
preservation classes, woodworking, traveling, reading and cooking
for family and friends. Helping people with whatever they needed.
He taught Macrame. He liked to make waffl es for everyone. He was
a bee keeper, and collector of tools, exotic woods, books, movies and
friends. He went on the Honor Flight in 2016. Mark was a member
of Royal Arch Masons, Cryptic Masons, Eastern Star, Hillah Shri-
ners, American Legion, Dorena Grange, NRA, Knights Templar, and
the VFW. He received a Masonic Hiram Award, a Special Recog-
nition Award from the Pacifi c Northwest Planerman’s Educational
Association. Fleet Reserve Association. He married Kay Hague in
Cottage Grove on March 19, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Kay;
daughters Jill Markham and Rebecca Burns, both of Washington; 6
grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by daughter, Sally and son, Matthew. A Celebration of Life and
Reception was held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at
the Cottage Grove Masonic Lodge, 33322 Row River Road, Cottage
Grove, OR 97424. Inurnment will be in Fort Rosecrans National
Cemetery in San Diego, CA. In lieu of fl owers, please make memo-
rial contributions to Fir Grove Cemetery for Book of Remembrance
plaque.
Arrangements are in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel
in Cottage Grove.

Christmas tree permits
are on sale until Dec. 21 at
all Umpqua National Forest
offi ces.
Permits are available at
Umpqua National Forest
offi ces in Cottage Grove,
Roseburg, Glide, Tiller
and Toketee between 8
a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday
through Friday.
Th e permits are for
personal use only and
cost $5 per tree. Th ere’s
a limit of fi ve tree per-
mits per household. Per-
mits may be used only
on those lands open to
Christmas tree harvest-
ing on the Umpqua Na-
tional Forest. Maps iden-
tifying these areas will be
provided at the time of
permit purchase.
As part of the ongoing
national initiative Ev-
ery Kid in a Park, fourth
graders who get their free
pass to access thousands
of fee sites across the
country may also bring
that pass into their lo-cal
Forest Service offi ce and
receive one Christmas tree
permit, free of charge.

Timothy John Patten
1967-2018
On Monday, November 19, we lost
Timothy John Patten, our beloved
husband, father, son, brother & friend.
Tim was born in Cottage Grove. He
was 51 years of age.
Time spent 2 years in the US Navy
where he worked on the fl ight deck of the
USS Ranger.
He married Tina Marie Kelly in 1992. They moved to
Vancouver, Washington where they raised their family.
Three years ago he and his family returned to Cottage Grove,
where they purchased a ranch where Tim spent most of his time.
Tim was very active in the Sixth & Gibbs Church of Christ.
Tim leaves behind a wife, Tina Marie, son, James, daughters,
Sarah & Emily. Mother, Mary Hurd & brothers, Mitchell, Wesley
and Matthew.
Preceding Tim in death were his father, Paul Patten and step-
father, Carl Hurd.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 26th at 6th
& Gibbs Church of Christ at 2pm.
