Carl “Mark” Robert Markham, Jr. of
Cottage Grove, OR died on November 16,
2018 at the age of 88. He was born on July
19, 1930 in Detroit, MI, to parents Carl and
Ruth (Waldo) Markham.
He joined the United States Navy in
1947, was Honorably Discharged in 1967. He was in the Fleet Re-
serve until 1977, 22 years on a diesel submarine. He served in the
Asiatic Pacifi c, and during WWII in Korea and Vietnam. He was a
California Game Warden/1963 Deputy of Fish and Game. For a time
he built houses. He was also a Logger, Colorado Hunting Guide, and
Rescue Diver. He was owner/operator of Planer Technical Service.
Mark enjoyed gardening, food preservation classes, woodworking,
and cooking for family and friends. Traveling. Reading. Helping
people with whatever they needed. He taught Macrame. He liked
to make waffl es for everyone. He was a bee keeper, and collector
of tools, exotic woods, books, movies and friends. He went on the
Honor Flight in 2017. Mark was a member of Royal Arch Masons,
Cryptic Masons, Eastern Star, Hillah Shriners, American Legion,
Dorena Grange, NRA, Knights Templar, and the VFW. He received
a Masonic Hiram Award, a Special Recognition Award from the
Pacifi c Northwest Planerman’s Educational Association. He was a
World Renowned Planerman, Fleet Reserve Association. He mar-
ried Kay Hague in Cottage Grove on March 19, 2000. He is sur-
vived by his wife, Kay; daughters Jill Markham and Rebecca Burns,
both of Washington; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by daughter, Sally Markham and son, Mat-
thew Markham. A Celebration of Life and Reception will be held
at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the Cottage Grove
Masonic Lodge, 33322 Row River Road, Cottage Grove, OR 97424.
Inurnment will be in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Di-
ego, CA. In lieu of fl owers, please make memorial contributions to
Fir Grove Cemetery for Book of Remembrance plaque.
Arrangements are in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel
in Cottage Grove.

“Sid” Jones, 92,
of Cottage Grove,
died Nov. 21,
2018. She was
born to Elva Isa-
bella (Marrs) and
Robert Cleveland
Gambill on Dec.
2, 1925 at her Aunt Laura’s home near where
she grew up in Coast Fork/Pleasant Hill, Ore-
gon. She attended school in Pleasant Hill until
mid-high school when she moved into Eugene to
attend and graduate from Eugene High School.
On May 29, 1947 in Klamath Falls, Oregon,
she and Merle Howard Williams were married.
The couple lived a short time at Coast Fork,
then moved to Springfi eld. They had three boys:
Lloyd Leonard, Gary Lynn and Larry Earl. Mer-
le passed away on June 3, 1973.
On April 24, 1976, she and Claude Everett
Jones were married at the home of her son, Gary.
Claude passed away on July 17, 2007.
As a young woman before she married,
she was employed at the Eugene Cannery and
at Chase Gardens. After marrying, she worked
for several years at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eu-
gene. In 1955 when the family moved to Cottage
Grove, she worked at the Cottage Grove Hos-
pital for nearly 25 years as a nursing assistant.
After Merle died, she worked a short while at a
couple nursing facilities in Eugene. After mar-
rying Claude, she operated a day care facility in
her home for many years.
She and Claude got to travel for several
years in their 5th wheel, throughout Alaska and

the Southwest. She particularly liked just driv-
ing mountain roads and seeing wildfl owers and
birds, almost all of which she knew the names
of. After meeting at a spouse bereavement group
in 2007, she and her newfound friend Elaine
Weimer had many fun times together going to
garage sales, eating dinner out, going to exer-
cise class and sharing stories about their dogs.
Sid was a member of Old Time Gospel Fellow-
ship in Cottage Grove.
She was preceded in death by her two hus-
bands, and two brothers, Robert Elton Gambill
in 1986 and Ronald Wayne Gambill in 1988.
Survivors include her sons and their wives,
Lloyd and Carla Williams, Gary and Debbie
Williams, and Larry and Theresa Williams, step-
son Charles and wife Linda Jones, grandchil-
dren, Jesse Williams, Jeffrey Williams, Jacob
and wife Amanda Williams, Kaysie Angeletta,
step-grandchildren, Kenneth Jones, Charity and
husband John Ode, daughter-in-law Peggy Wil-
liams, and several nieces and nephews.
No services will be held at Sid’s request.
