lights come on and the steam is
rising.”
While looking for a location,
Pilling contacted Cool and after
a couple conversations, South
Lane School District and NDPR
agreed to a contract that was
signed in August. According to
SLSD communications coordi-
nator Garrett Bridgens, SLSD
pays $100 per month for the fa-
cility in addition to the cost of
utilities.
After securing a space, the
district ensured they would be
able to get students by provid-
ing a bus that picks students up
from Lincoln Middle School
and CGHS and makes a trip
to Drain at 3:30 and 4:30 be-
fore dropping students back off
around 6:45.
The 25-yard pool in Drain al-
lows the teams to more precisely
prepare for races that are multi-
ples of 25 (races of 50, 100, 200,
400 or 500 yards) opposed to
practicing in the Cottage Grove
pool that was 33-yards.
“Our 33-yard pool was more
of a training pool but this is nice
because… when we practice in
here we know the speed we’re
going to go in the race,” said
Cottage Grove sophomore MJ
Raade who competed at state
last season.
The other wrinkle in the pool
is being outdoors, something
new for Cottage Grove swim-
mers but not their competitors
around the league almost all of
whom practice outdoors.
“The benefits for an outdoor
pool is, one, when you’re work-
ing out air quality. When you’re
in a stuffy pool and that kind of
stuff, you can breathe a lot eas-
ier,” said Pilling. “Actually, our
best team in our league, practic-
es all-year outside. Marshfield.”
But while the temperatures
may be getting cold, the water
stays warm.
“The person that’s miserable
in this are the people that are out
(of the water),” said Pilling who
was prepared for the day wear-
ing a sweatshirt, leather jacket,
jeans and rain boots. “If you’re
in the water, you’re warm.”
