COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL NOVEMBER 21, 2018
TERRY from B1
turned Yoncalla down and
didn’t come.
CGS: What changed?
DT: I had an opportunity to
apply for Cottage Grove to be
the head coach. I know they
went the route of hiring an alum
there which I understand, I to-
tally get it. I’m an alum here so
they’re excited about that. Hav-
ing an alum at your school is
kind of more – it’s like hiring a
relative.
So I decided, hm, I’ll contact

Yoncalla. I’ll see. I know the job
was still posted. ‘Hey is there
still an opening there?’ and so
Mr. Barry, the superintendent
principal said yes they are inter-
ested in interviewing me and I
got hired for the head coaching
job here. It wasn’t until August
so I finished the Cottage Grove
summer season and kind of
was looking for a job and this
opened up so here I am.
CGS: What are the challeng-
es of coming into a new group?
DT: I think this is one of the
toughest things. I know every-
body says your first year as a
head coach at a school that’s
not known to you, the players,
is the toughest year. So I think
I’m going to use some of the ad-
vantages of being an alum. Even
though that was 30 years ago, a
lot of things have changed and
none of the players know me a
lot of community members still
know me. And so that was nice.
But as far as that, I think build-

ing relationships is huge. I think
whether you are a new coach or
have been coaching a long time
building relationship with the
players.
But I think coming in, talking
about me being an alum, talking
about the passion and the tradi-
tion. That’s huge, that’s kind of
the theme this year. Our shooter
shirts are going to have tradition
on it. Just to kind of get them to
buy in to the school pride and
tradition. Build on what they
have.
There’s a lot of good things,
Yoncalla, I know, has always
been competitive in all their
sports. And try to build on that
and I think kids are hungry for a
coach to come in and have good
structure, organization and
bring a good brand of basketball
to Yoncalla so they can compete.
CGS: As the third coach in
the last three years at Yoncalla,
how do you bring stability to
the program?

DT: I think I go back to rela-
tionships and finding, I like to
find out and assess their skill
level. Not only their skill lev-
el and who their personalities
and then bring that together.
Because they all have different
personalities, they’ve all been
through a lot, like you said, last
three years. Some of them have
played for that coach that left a
couple years ago. Some had the
new coach. And then they had
another coach because of medi-
cal issues and whatever was go-
ing on with another coach. A lot
of changes for them and that’s
hard.
And so I think me being an
alumni, my goal, you never
know year to year what changes.
I see myself being here for a lit-
tle bit. There’s no guarantees but
my goal is to be here to build a
program. Because we do have
a lot of young players that can
make an impact. What I would
say is look out for Yoncalla next

year. Not that I don’t want to win
big this year, because I do. I’m a
competitor, I want to win big.
But it’s your first year and you’ve
got to get the kids to believe
and buy into your system and
we have, on top of the talent we
have, we have a lot of young tal-
ent that’s going to be returning
next year that I think is going to
make a bigger impact.
CGS: What are your goals
for this season?
DT: I think, to be realistic, try
to compete. You know, first of
all, don’t worry about the wins
and just go out there and com-
pete and try to win some ball
games and improve. Like I said,
as a coach, I honestly look at the
big picture because you have to.
You have to look at our youth
program. At a small school it
can be tough but look at our
youth program, look at our JV
and look at all those players
and coach to your strength and
what’s coming up.
