ND finishes fifth in state
North Douglas
volleyball wins in the
quarterfinals, drops
next two matches at the
state tournament

After a quarterfinal victory
in Redmond at the state volley-
ball tournament last weekend,
North Douglas lost their next
two matches to end their sea-
son by finishing in fifth place.
The weekend started with
Friday’s match against Days
Creek. This was the fifth time
this season the teams had
played each other with each
team entering the day with a
2-2 record in the head-to-head
matchup. But Friday morning
it was North Douglas winning
(25-21, 16-25, 25-18, 25-14)
when it mattered most.
“Well the girls, they were ex-
cited to play Days Creek espe-
cially since we had lost to them
in the district tournament.
They wanted a rematch and
they were just very pumped,”
said North Douglas head coach
Anne Campbell.
In the first set the Warriors
offense was clicking and the
team led by as many as eight
before letting the Wolves back
into the game late. Days Creek
carried that momentum in to
the second set. Throughout
the set, North Douglas strug-
gled to string points together
as successful points were met
with errors.
“After we lost the second
game,” said Campbell, “I said,
‘So, the team that wanted to
play Days Creek played in
the first game. The team that
didn’t want to play Days Creek
played in the second game so
who’s going to play in the third
game?’”
For the rest of the way it was
North Douglas doing what
they do best with Arianna Hel-
gren and Abby Whipple pro-
viding an offensive spark to lift
the team and get them back on
track. Helgren was named to
the first team tournament team
while Whipple was named to
the second team.
“I’ve brought teams over
here that were good and then
the nerves kind of get the bet-
ter of you in that first match
and it’s really easy to kind of fall
behind and not able to dig your
way out. So just to get that first
match under our belt, it got
everybody a little more confi-
dent,” said Campbell. “I think
that going into tonight it’s go-
ing to be a really tough match
because St. Paul is good... but I
feel like having that first match
in is going to help us play bet-
ter tonight.”
In Friday night’s match
against tournament champion
St. Paul, the Warriors were beat
3-0. The Buckaroos finished
the season 30-0 and dropped
just four sets all year. Helgren
had 15 digs and 10 kills while
Whipple compiled 13 assists,
10 digs, nine kills and three
aces. Freshman Samantha
MacDowell had 17 digs.
On Saturday, the Warriors
lost the third-place game to
third-ranked Hosanna Chris-
tian in four sets. Helgren had 22
digs and 11 kills while Whipple
recorded a triple-double with
24 digs, 19 assists and 12 kills.

But for all the success of the
passing attack, the Lions were
unable to establish a rushing
attack and after some sacks and
a tackle for loss on a punt, the
team finished the game with -27
rushing yards.
After trading touchdowns,
a late first-quarter Gladstone
touchdown put the home-side
up 13-7 when the Lions drove

on the five, Cottage Grove set-
tled for a Giffen field goal. After
a defensive stop, Cottage Grove
was again driving but a fumble
turned into a scoop-and-score
for Gladstone to go up 10 in the
final minutes of the first half.
While it looked like the teams
might pack it in and head to the
half, the Lions answered with
a one-play drive that saw Giff-
en finding Zumwalt for a quick
strike. After a missed extra
point, Gladstone put together a
five-play drive for a touchdown.
Cottage Grove again had first
and goal but had to settle with
a field goal before the half ex-
pired.
On the opening drive of the
second half, the Lions marched
down field and Graves found Ja-
cob Dunn for a 19-yard touch-
down to cut their deficit to just
two points. While both offen-
sive units were having their
way in the first half, it was both
defensive sides coming up with
stops in the second half. After
the initial Cottage Grove score,
both teams were continuously
stopped. A Gladstone field goal
gave the team a five-point ad-
vantage in the closing minutes
before the Gladiators sealed the
victory.
Gladstone will face sev-
enth-ranked La Grande on Fri-
day in quarterfinals.
Parks had a touchdown run for
North Douglas.
Elkton Football:
Last Friday, the Elks fell to
Camas Valley 40-12 in the first
round of the playoffs. Elkton
scored a pair of touchdowns in
the first quarter but were shut
out the rest of the game. Elkton’s
Austin Luzier finished with 150
yards passing and one touch-
down on the day. Jase Billman
added a kickoff return for a
touchdown.
Camas Valley had 470 yards
of offense.
