Josephine Elizabeth Palmer
1924-2018
Josephine Elizabeth Palmer
passed away peacefully of natural
causes on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018. She
was born on Dec. 29, 1924 to Otto
and Freida Buxkemper in George
West, Texas, and lived to the age of 93.
She was always a devout and ac-
tive participant in the Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Catholic Church in
Cottage Grove, OR and for the last
two years at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newport, OR.
Josie willfully gave donations of time and money, and reached
out to friends and new acquaintances in support of their growth
in faith. Many groups and activities benefi tted from her enthu-
siasm and good-natured dedication. Her smile was a welcome
and uplift ing sign of her good faith. She may have been short,
having never reached fi ve feet tall, but she was never lacking of
encouragement and caring for others.
Josie was a ‘Rosie the Riveter’ during World War II, having
worked on repairing aircraft to aid in the war eff ort. She mar-
ried Albert Palmer in 1943 and they raised seven children to-
gether. Always encouraging and loving, Josie was selfl essly fo-
cused on the needs and well being of her husband and children.
She maintained an uncompromising view of right and wrong,
and taught that to her children at every opportunity. When
Al was injured, Josie went back to work, fi rst at Montgomery
Wards and then as a teacher’s aide at Harrison Elementary
School, where she remained until her retirement. Josie enjoyed
traveling and bunka shishu embroidery, winning several blue
ribbons for her artistry. Her passion for the Ducks was unri-
valled by most, a love she shared with her husband, Al.
Left to cherish their memory of her are her children, Rob-
ert (Patricia) Palmer of Houston, Texas, James Palmer of Eu-
gene, OR, Father William Palmer of Newport, OR, Patricia
(Matthew) Rouse of Deer Park, IL, Jeanne Gibson of Eugene,
OR, Joseph Palmer of Plano, TX, and by her brother, Mervin
Buxkemper of Bandera, TX. She has nine grandchildren, seven
great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Palmer, eldest
son John Palmer, siblings Lawrence Buxkemper, Vernon Bux-
kemper, Lillie Maglothin, Mary Selix, Celestine Mayes and Ev-
elyn Dubose.
A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at
Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Cottage Grove, with a reception
that followed. Burial followed at Fir Grove Cemetery. Visitation
was at Smith-Lund-Mills Chapel on Friday, Oct. 12 from 6-8
p.m.

William H. (Bill) Droege
1930-2018
William H. (Bill) Droege (87) passed
away Thursday, Sept. 27 at his home in
Cottage Grove, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born in Detroit, Michigan where
he happily spent his childhood on his
Grandpa Droege’s farm, acquiring strong
values that he passed on to his children. Values such as, when
you see someone who needs help, help them, do an honest day’s
work, have a fi rm handshake that’s as good as your word, and
if something is worth doing, do it right the fi rst time. Over 87
years he was a caring husband, a proud father, and an adoring
grandfather. His interests included athletics, bird watching,
and fi shing. Bill was a pioneer in commercial Christmas tree
farming, a profession in which he made countless friends and
subjected many of them to the rigors of tree harvests. Bill was
truly a jack of all trades, and master of many. Bill is survived
by his wife of 46 years, Cleo, and their children, Matt (Marla),
Kelly (Sofi e), Robin and Amy; his eldest children, Tod, Rick
and Lisa Droege, 8 grands and 2 great grands. An open house
celebration of Bill’s life will be November 18, at 1-4 p.m. at the
Droege home in Cottage Grove. In Lieu of fl owers please plant
a tree or build a bird house in his name. Arrangements in the
care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove, OR.
