Nancy (Nichols) Hanks
1936-2018
Nancy (Nichols) Hanks of Cottage
Grove passed away on September 27, 2018.
She died unexpectedly aft er a brief battle
with cancer. She was 81.
She was born October 30, 1936 in
Stamford, (Jones County) TX to Eugene
Modense and Hattie La Verne (McClellan)
Nichols. Nancy was raised in White Settlement, TX. She grad-
uated from Brewer High, White Settlement, TX in 1955. Nancy
married Bobby Gene Hanks on September 21, 1956. She was an
active member of the Brewer High School Alumni association.
She attended many Brewer High School re-unions over the years
with her lifelong (~75 years) friend and fellow Brewer High
School graduate Nancy Harbaugh of Elkton, OR. Go Bears!
Nancy or better known as “Nanu” for those close to the
family was a cook, a waitress, a cashier, a dog groomer and her
most cherished profession was a mother, grandmother and great
grandmother for over 60 years. Nancy was a military wife and
mother that saw her relocate her fi ve kids many times over the
years. Her stops were in Texas, Mississippi, Guam, Arizona,
Florida, South Carolina, Alabama and her most beloved and ev-
erlasting home in Oregon. She was proud to call Texas her home
state.
Nancy enjoyed reading, dancing, country music, everything
about Texas, camping, playing games with her kids, grandkids
and great grandkids over the years, watching Soap Operas and
Th e Westminster Dog Show and had a special place in her heart
for her dogs and her grand dogs. She was always sneaking her
dogs and her grand dog’s treats and they were forever grateful.
All of her kids and grandkids have fond memories of her as a
mother, grandmother and grandbaby and grand dog sitter over
the years. As adults we are all grateful for her love and support
over the years.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Hanks
of 52 years in 2009 and her parents Eugene and La Verne Nich-
ols. She is survived by her fi ve kids and three brothers. Brothers
Ernie Nichols, Bedford, TX; Danny Nichols(Laurie) of Mans-
fi eld, TX and Dickie Nichols (Connie) of Colleyville, TX. Son
Nicky Hanks (Wanda) Eugene, OR, the prankster born on her
21 st birthday. Daughter Cynthia Babcock, Brooklet, GA, Th e
Southern Belle. Daughter, Ginger Ramey (Chris), Cedar Rap-
ids, IA, Th e Baker and Mom’s sounding board. Daughter Don-
na Smith (Jody), Elkton, OR, Th e Giver. Daughter Linda Earls,
Roseburg, OR, Th e Youngin. Nancy also has 13 grandkids, 14
great grandkids, numerous nieces and nephews across the coun-
try and numerous grand dogs.
A celebration of life for family and close friends will be
scheduled later. In lieu of fl owers please make a donation to ei-
ther your local Animal Shelter or to your local Literacy Council.

Cheryl Rene’ Herriott “Cherie
1948-2018
Cheryl Rene’ Herriott “Cherie”, 70 of Cot-
tage Grove, Oregon passed away Septem-
ber 26, 2018. She was born March 5, 1948,
in San Francisco, CA to James H. and M.
Frances (Ellis) Crawford, Jr. Cherie gradu-
ated from Mills High School, Millbrae, CA
and attended Skyline College. She was a
cashier for Safeway, a Veterinarian Technician, an AT&T oper-
ator and was owner/operator of a liquor store. Cherie loved her
kids, grandkids, family, extended family and all animals. She
was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Cherie married
John “Jack” Thomas Herriott on May 11, 1968, in San Francis-
co, CA. She is survived by son Robert Todd (Robin) Herriott,
Aloha, OR, daughter Jacqueline Rene’ (Todd) Baird, Spring-
fi eld, OR, brothers; Jim (Sandy) and Joe (Rohnda)Datzman, sis-
ter Marn (Jack) Horn, sister Jeanie (Chuck) Robertson, 3 grand-
children; James, Samuel and Daniella. Cherie was preceded
in death by her spouse Jack Herriott in 2017. A Celebration of
Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at
the Trinity Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions may be
made to Life Flight, the Humane Society, Serenity Lane or Cot-

Doris Pauline Miller
1922-2018
Doris Pauline Miller of Cottage Grove
passed away peacefully at home surrounded
by her family on September 24, 2018. She
was 96. She was born in Orland, California
on May 1, 1922 to parents Matthew and
Frances (Wilson) Kirkpatrick. Three
generations of Kirkpatrick’s arrived in
Creswell in 1929 in a family freight wagon
of possessions, with ten mules and they settled in upper Bear
Creek. Doris graduated from Creswell High School in 1939 and
attended two years at Eugene Business College. Doris married
Clarence Miller in Twin Falls, ID. She worked one day a week
at the outlying schools as a secretary for 22 years. “She knew
hundreds of kids and their parents, and enjoyed the people so
much, I am sure she will be remembered fondly.” Doris liked
to cook, can, and knit. She liked to sew and even made all her
mother’s clothes. “Mom was a holdover from a time when
ships were made of wood, men made of steel, and women were
made of titanium.” She was a member of the Dorena Grange
since 1960. Doris is survived by her son Harvey (Sue) Miller
of Cottage Grove, OR; brother Gerald Kirkpatrick of Marcola,
OR; sister Ruth Knox of Mountain View, ID; grandsons Roger
Sutton and Clark Miller, 4 great granddaughters, and 6 great-
great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband
Clarence Miller, 3 brothers and 1 sister. Our family would like
to thank Sacred Home Health and Hospice for all the loving care
they gave our mom. The family asks that you adopt a pet, enable
hospice, or hug your mom. “Yar, Harvey Miller and family.”

Vada Fayrene Barkemeyer of Cottage
Grove died on September 17, 2018. She
was 87.
She was born in Smithville, OK on
April 3, 1931 to parents Harlin and Vergie
Lorene (Sullivan) Green. She was a
homemaker but worked during the 50’s and 60’s in the potato
fi elds. She loved gardening and canning, cooking, and juicing
her grapes. She enjoyed her fl ower garden.
She loved the beach, collecting rocks, and she loved
playing and sledding in the snow. She was always willing to
help anyone who needed it. She especially enjoyed spending
time with her family. She was a member of Victory Country
Church. Fayrene married Bill Barkemeyer in Klamath Falls,
OR in January 1950. She is survived by sons, Larry (Rita)
Barkemeyer and Paul (Donia) Barkemeyer of Cottage Grove;
son, Steven Barkemeyer of Astoria, OR; daughter, Denise
Barkemeyer; 3 sisters, 4 brothers, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-
grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on
Saturday October 6, 2018, at the Delight Valley Church of Christ,
33087 Saginaw Road E., Saginaw, OR with a potluck to follow.
A private graveside burial was held on Monday, September 24,
2018 at Fir Gove Cemetery. Arrangements by Smith-Lund-

Curtis Benson Deatherage
1952-2018
Curtis Benson Deatherage, 66 of Cre-
swell, Oregon passed away September 27,
2018. He was born September 25, 1952, in
Roseburg, OR to Benson and Ethel (Harri-
son) Deatherage. Curt had recently retired
after 30 years of operating his business, Curt
Deatherage Auto Electric, in Creswell. He
was a talented photographer who won many photography awards.
He was a published author, and he wrote a column called “It Hap-
pened in Oregon” for the Creswell Chronicle. He also published a
book, “Lumber Icons,” which documented his extensive research
and photography of wigwam burners in the Western United States.
He was a lifelong fan of auto racing, serving as a historian for the
Cottage Grove Speedway and sponsor for several local drivers. He
operated the Cottage Grove BMX track for many years as well. Curt
was interested in many things of the paranormal and conspiratorial
variety--he took annual trips with family to the gates near Area 51,
and he had a huge collection of literature regarding the assassination
of JFK. He was a member of the Cottage Grove Historical Society
and put on several presentations for that group. In his youth, Curt
was a Boy Scout, and he reached the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a
lover of dogs, especially his ever-present dalmatian and dachshund
companions. Curt was widely known in the community for his gen-
erosity and kindness. His biggest joy in his later years was spending
time with his only grandchild, Ian.
Curt is survived by his life partner Susan Bullard of Creswell,
OR, mother Ethel Deatherage of Cottage Grove, OR, daughter Vel-
vet and son-in-law Alexander Miscione of Irvine, CA, sister Marie
Deatherage of Seabrook, WA, sister Sarah Koss of Longview WA,
brother Dennis Deatherage of Cottage Grove, OR and grandson, Ian
Miscione of Irv ine, CA. He was preceded in death by his father
(Bernice) Benson Deatherage.
