“There are some logistical
challenges,” Kelsh said, not-
ing that the group plans to
work with the city on how
exactly to move forward
once the entirety of the vil-
lage is approved by the city.
The project has been fund-
raising to earn the approx-
imate $1 million it needs
to see comple-tion. Earli-
er this year, Cottage Vil-
lage announced that it had
earned $300,000 through
several grants including one
from a Presbyterian Church
group and hoped to add to
its funds through addition-
al grants from Banner Bank
and other organizations as
well as community support.

tenant — at first.
Instead, the structure
would serve as a model
home for the group to show
potential donors, interested
renters and curious neigh-
bors.
The house would even-
tually become part of the
tiny house village, should
it be approved, though the
group still has issues to iron
out concerning the logistics
of life in the tiny neighbor-
hood.
Whether each house
would have its own address
or simply be a unit under
the main structure’s address
has yet to be decided. Early
on, Cottage Village was as-
signed the same group liv-
ing structure as SquareOne’s
Eugene projects; members
of the community would be
self-governing.
Whether that means the
group decides to purchase
one internet plan or branch
out separately is still a ques-
tion as is the majority of
the day-to-day operation of
group living.
As rental prices continue
to remain high and invento-
ry low, however, the village
aims to provide an option
for those who would other-
wise face homelessness.
“Other people may de-
cide to place an accessory
dwelling on their property
but it’s probably go-ing to be
to generate extra income,”
Kelsh said. “This is different.
It’s really targeting people
that could be homeless if
they can’t find a good place
to live.”
According to the latest
United Way study, 44 per-
cent of Lane County resi-
dents struggle financially.
Families that can technically
pay their bills but have no
savings and could not meet
the challenge of an unex-
pected financial burden
such as a medical bill or car
repair, are considered AL-
ICE families; they don’t fall
below the poverty line but
more often than not, are liv-
ing paycheck-to-paycheck.
According to Kelsh, those
families would be serviced
by Cottage Village as well as
individuals on social secu-
rity and other low income
populations.
The first tiny home is ex-
pected to be built sometime
this fall and the entire proj-
ect is set to go before the
city’s planning commission
on Sept. 19.

ny expects Cottage Grove’s
population to grow from
roughly 10,000 residents
in 2018 to nearly 14,000 in
20 years and forecasts that
1,379 new dwelling units
will be required.
It notes the gain would
require 64 new dwelling
units per year for the next
20 years.
The housing needs anal-
ysis will be presented on
Sept. 13 in the back room
of Stacy’s Restaurant at 5:30
p.m. The public is welcome

I was born in the small town of Valley City, North Dakota on December 21, of
1986. I moved to Oregon in 1994 when I was seven years old. I graduated from
Cottage Grove High School in 2005. In 2003 I came to KNND as an intern
in the news department. My eight week internship served to reinforce my
