toga party, but residents participated in an event they will remember for a lifetime.

were operational, leading
to long beer lines and the
event, which was cash only,
saw its ATM machines mal-
function.
As a result, the chamber is
selling left over merchandise
at its offi ce.
“Th is was a big risk for
us,” Palmer said, informing
the council that the original
idea behind the event came
with a $50,000 price tag that
soon grew to $112,000.
Eventually, the chamber
agreed to a fi gure closer to
$75,000 that Palmer said he
decreased even further.
“Th ere are still numbers
out there and we’re still get-
ting invoices but we’re fair-
ly certain that we’re in the
black,” he said.

Th e toga party was aimed
at celebrating the anniver-
sary of the fi lm “Animal
House” that had scenes
fi lmed in Cottage Grove 40
years ago. Several scenes
took place in the armory as
well as on Main Street.
When asked if it would
become an annual event,
Palmer quickly said no.
Instead, he said it may be
a 10-year event, but noted
that the individuals who
either appeared in the
movie themselves or had
their band’s songs played,
may not be able to contin-
ue in planned celebrations.
“I don’t know how many
years Otis has in him,”
Palmer said in regards to
a musician associated with
the fi lm who attended the
Aug. 18 party.
Palmer
continuously
noted that, while the city
didn’t break the record, it
has accomplished other
feats.
“A lot of people think
Cottage Grove is a small
town with small events
and small minds and we
proved them wrong,” he
said. “I think we opened
the hearts and minds of
people.”
