weekend at Speedway

“You’re kind of bullet proof.”
For food, Harrison would
stop at grocery stores, mak-
ing sure he stocked up be-
fore they closed on Sunday,
and would often fuel up in
the morning with a croissant
or pastry of some sort. He
also made sure to get fresh
produce along the way and
plenty of sandwiches all to
go to his goal of consuming
6,000 calories a day. A key
part of that goal was having
irradiated milk that needed
no refrigeration and was a
welcome combination of cal-
ories and hydration.
Along his journey – that
featured paths that varied in
quality from bumpy gravel
to a surface smooth as glass –
he was able to befriend many
people along the way. While
the language could be hard,
conversation was easy with
cyclists going the same way
and talk of travels between
riders he encountered from
all over the world. But there
is one conversation he kept
coming back to.

“The item that got the
single most piece of conver-
sation was the mirror that I
use. And I don’t know why,”
said Harrison of a mirror
that attaches to his helmet.
“Seemed to be the thing.
One guy said, ‘Come on over
here, show me this thing.’ I
was just riding by, he want-
ed to see it. I don’t know. If
somebody wants to look at
it, okay. I’m not going to stop
them.”
Harrison continued his
route and got to Budapest
and made his way back to
Cottage Grove. And the
thing that stood out to him
after this trip and after so
many other trips he has done
remains the same. At its core,
this is what he loves to do.
“I hope everybody finds
something that makes them
as happy as this makes me
feel. Because cycling isn’t for
everybody and touring and
camping isn’t for everybody
but finding that sweet spot to
be able to personally reflect,
physically exert, explore,
discover, reinterpret is really
satisfying,” said Harrison.

Collen Winebarger took full ad-
vantage of his front row starting
position in the Late Model finale
for the Logger’s Cup. The Cor-
bett native, racing for car owner
Jerry Schram, lead the field the
entire distance to win going un-
challenged for his first career Log-
ger’s Cup victory and his second
straight night he bested the com-
petition in the class.
In the Mohawk Metal IMCA
Modified main event Evan Brit-
ton, of Cottage Grove, showed the
way for the first five laps. Unfor-
tunately, he got caught up in an
incident giving the lead to C.J.

trailblazer was Collen Winebarg-
er. Despite several cautions and
restarts Winebarger maintained
the position and doubled up
on the weekend for the second
straight win in the Mods and his
fourth win at CGS in the division.
Medford veteran Mark Wauge
Salem’s Chris Mott had the field
covered for much of the feature.
Mott lead the first fourteen laps
before being overtaken by Randy
Barley. Barley, from Albany, went
on to win his second Super Sport
win in the final race for the class at
“The Grove”.
Eric Ashley took care of busi-
ness in the Quality RV Repair
Hornets. The Jasper driver, racing
for car owner Randy Kuhl, stayed
in front the entire distance despite
some heavy pressure from chal-
lengers. It is the second occasion
he has graced victory lane.
Cottage Grove Speedway re-
turned to racing on Tuesday, Au-
gust 14th for the ISCS Week Of
Speed.
