The Lane Fire Author-
ity announced on Sat-
urday, July 21, that fire-

from South Lane as part
of the Lane County Task
Force demobilized.
“This is not 100 per-

an announcement from
Terry Ney, Lane Fire Au-
thority Chief read. “But
it is scheduled to happen
if there is not an unex-
pected change today in
the status of the fire.” The
taskforce returned home
on Sunday.
The Lane County task
force was dispatched to
help in efforts to contain
the Substation fire in The

t takes an army to turn Coiner Park into Bo-
hemia City but last weekend, the ranks closed
in and closed out a fifth decade of Bohemia
Mining Days (BMD).
“Many hands makes light work,” is a phrase
festival coordinator Cindy Weeldreyer keeps close
during the planning and execution of what has
been long touted as one of the city’s biggest tourism
draws.
“Volunteer recruitment is a challenge for every
community organization in town,” Weeldreyer
said. “It takes a small army to produce Bohemia
Mining Days, yet for 59 years we’ve managed to get
by with a small core of dedicated leaders who are
so passionate about continuing this tradition they
collectively invest thousands of hours to make it all
happen and this year was no exception.”
BMD paid local high school students $100 for
eight hours of work and managed to coordinat just
over 100 volunteers.
And this year, the BMD crew had its work cut out
for it after complaints about last year’s carnival went
viral. While BMD retained Reiner Entertainment as
the carnival vendor, it did install a BMD coordina-
tor on-site to ensure festival-goers complaints and
concerns were heard.
“Regrettably, as social media has exploded in
recent years, it only takes a few negative complaints
to grab lots of attention and overshadow all the
thousands of carnival attendees who do not partici-
pate in social media yet have a great time with their
family and friends,” Weeldreyer said. “These satis-
fied customers truly appreciate Bohemia Mining
Days for bringing a carnival to town to continue a
59-year-long tradition that provides the opportunity

The Substation fire,
considered the num-
ber one fire in the na-
tion, drew more than
200 firefighters across
73 agencies. The Oregon
National Guard, under
orders from Governor
Kate Brown was activat-
ed to assist the Oregon
Department of Forestry
with wildfire suppression
efforts after Brown de-
clared a statewide wild-
fire emergency.
"The wildfire season
has escalated in Oregon

and crews are work-
ing around the clock
to keep homes and re-
sources safe," Governor
Kate Brown said. "Given
drought conditions and
hotter than usual tem-

The rate of vaccina-
tion for two-year-olds
in Lane County is on the
rise, according to the lat-
est data.
The Ford Family
Foundation, in collabor-
tation with the Oregon
State University Exten-
sion Service released its
annual report, “Oregon
by the Numbers” last
month, highlighting sev-
eral key measurements
in the state ranging from
social issues to infra-
structure.
In the report, it notes
that vaccination rates for
toddlers in Lane County
is at 70 percent, on par
with the state average
and on the upswing for
the county.
The statistic is in line
with data released from
the Oregon Health Au-
thority that noted 78
percent of children in
Lane County daycare—
school programs prior to
kindergarten—had re-
cieved vaccinations but
the state report noted
the rate was low. It cate-
gorized any school dis-
trict with a vaccination
rate of below 80 percent
as “most vulnerable.”
South Lane School
District has a strict vacci-
nation policy that reads,
in part, “By law, shots
are required for children
in attendance at public
and private schools, pre-
schools, childcare facil-
ities and HeadStart pro-
grams.”
Oregon Revised Stat-
ute (ORS) .267 requires
full immunizations for
contagious diseases. Ac-
cording to the state of
Oregon, children with
religious or medical ex-
emptions do not have to
be vaccinated.
Parents claiming a
non-medical
exemp-
tion must complete
an E-module online,
available on the state’s
website, that feature in-
formation about immu-
nizations and the spread
of contagious diseases.
