Carolyn L. Workman
1928-2018
Carolyn L. Workman of Cottage Grove was
born Carolyn LaVelle Johns on Sept 7th,
1928 in Eugene, Ore. As most children of the
depression era, Carolyn learned swiftly the
value of sanctuary in an uncertain time. In her
youngest years her father left her struggling
mother, Arlene, with little Carolyn and infant
sister, Geri still in arms. Baby Geri went to a
neighbor who could properly care for her while
Carolyn was raised by foster parents, Shorty and
Adeline Kyte. Adeline’s way was that of strict
faith and selfl essness all of which rooted seeds of
generosity, hospitality and charity later to bloom in Carolyn’s life. Her
desire to nurture a family of her own, to whom she would vow to accept
nothing less than cohesion and harmony, began here and would motivate
all of the actions that would defi ne her life.
In 1942, at the age of 14, she moved to Cottage Grove where she was
reunited with her mother and worked in her uncles ice cream shop on
6th and Main called, “Gussie’s”. Carolyn’s classic beauty made her
the obvious choice to promote the family’s product in newspaper ads
and other promotions as the “Dutch Girl” alongside her cousin Nonda
Stenshoel of Eugene, Or. She graduated from CGHS and shortly
thereafter married Bill Workman on June 23, 1946. Bills family owned
and operated “Sunnyside Greenhouse”, also in Cottage Grove, where
she worked tending to the fl owers and bookkeeping.
Carolyn and Bill built their fi rst home on South River Road where they raised three children, Kathy
Lusk-Miller of La Grande, Julie Fox of Cottage Grove and Mike Workman of Puyallup, Wa. She
kept her house spotless whilst maintaining as bookkeeper and dispatcher for Bills chipping business,
“Workman’s Sawdust service” and as representative for Cottage Grove’s foreign exchange Program
not to mention copious bridge club gatherings. In the years when her own children were growing
up, she reached out to host students from Chile, Australia, Bolivia, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany
and Japan providing not only a warm bed, good food and a look at American life for the students
but a broader appreciation of humankind to her own children. The Workman home was well known
for being a buzz of activity. Go-cars put-putted in circles about the perimeter of the property, a
zip-line carried venturesome playmates from one side of the yard to another, a mega-giant inner-
tube served and an adequate substitute for a bouncy house and cardboard sleds precariously wove
betwixt large Weyerhaeuser barrels as all were careening down a grassy slope in the back yard.
Imagine the gangly arms and legs of neighbor kids hanging out, hollering, and having the time of
their lives. There was always something happening and it was usually quite loud. To Carolyn it was
pure heaven.
After Bill’s tragic death in 1983 she showed remarkable strength and stamina by keeping the
family business in tact with son, Mike, until all the promised product orders had been met and all
responsibilities satisfi ed. She was never a quitter and when faced with unfavorable odds would just
focus harder until the outcome was within acceptable parameters. Once the challenging detour of
wrapping up the sawdust business had resolved, Carolyn took time to travel. She visited many of the
families of the exchange students she had hosted in their home countries, made a trip to Africa on a
photo safari and chaperoned a group of high school and University of Oregon students to Mexico on
a mission. She also served as a teacher for Cottage Grove’s Evergreen Child Evangelism program
where she adored and ministered to many local children. It wasn’t until recent years that Carolyn
realized she has a passion and gift for writing poetry and short stories. She wrote an entire book of
poems for children, another for adults and an unfi nished autobiography that was as much about the
lives of her beloved, mostly harmonious and absolutely cohesive family as it was about her own.
Carolyn remained active in the lives of her grand-children and great-grandchildren up until her very
last hours which ended peacefully in her home early Saturday morning, the 16th of June of this year.
Her unshakable faith and compassion for all people will forever serve infl uential as her legacy. She
is survived by her sister Geri, all three of her children, six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held June 30th at 2:00 P.M. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in
Cottage Grove. Interment was at Fir Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove. Arrangements in the care of

Erik G. Engen
1954-2018
Erik G. Engen, of Cottage Grove,
passed away at age 63 on May 27 at
RiverBend Medical Center, with his
wife and close friends around him. His
health had been gradually declining
over the past couple of years.
He was born to Per Engen and
Dorothy (Clementsen) Engen in Loma
Linda, California on August 17, 1954.
He graduated from California State
University at Los Angeles with a business degree and worked
in real estate around LA for a while. He also got a degree in
electronics from Chaffey College, which went along with his
awesome ability to fi x almost anything. Later on, he also taught
himself the intricacies of trading commodities and spent a year
doing that. Most recently, he worked for Eugene 4J School
District before retiring in March.
True to his Viking heritage, he loved all kinds of adventures.
He was a certifi ed SCUBA diver, and also spent time surfi ng
at Huntington Beach, sailing to Catalina Island, skiing at
Mammoth Mountain and Big Bear, and riding motorcycles with
his brother, Tor, in the San Gabriel Mountains. He went panning
for gold in Mexico with his friend John, and also spent two
summers on Amchitka Island, Alaska, working for his uncle, a
government contractor, dismantling structures around the site
of underground nuclear bomb detonations a few years earlier.
He moved to Oregon in 1989 and met Denise Seitz Brady in
1991 when both were starting jobs at Sacred Heart Hospital. They
were partners for 27 years, married for 18 of those, and enjoyed
remodeling and other kinds of projects around the property;
swimming and biking at nearby Cottage Grove Lake; trips to
the coast and Cascades for hiking, camping, and sightseeing;
and driving all over western Oregon for concerts, quilt shows,
car shows, lavender festivals, and other fun things. One special
adventure was buying a 20-foot ocean-going sailboat and
hauling it back from Lake Tahoe. Downtime included watching
episodes of This Old House and Gold Rush; enjoying the deer,
crows, and hummingbirds that gathered around the fi eld; and
making a loving home for 10 cats over the years. He started
growing his fi rst garden at age 7 and enjoyed having one almost
every year since, and when he planted sunfl owers for a few
years, some of them grew more than 10 feet tall.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Brady Engen; his brothers,
Tor Engen and Chris Engen; several nieces and nephews;
several cousins and other relatives in Norway; and four beloved
cats. He was preceded in death by his parents; his favorite uncle,
Ed Clementsen; and also by Shanti, his rescue dog from LA,
and six kitties. His friends and co-workers enjoyed his quiet,
but sometimes quirky personality, and he will truly be missed.
A celebration of Erik’s life will take place Saturday, June 30
at 2 pm at his and Denise’s home. For directions, call 541-913-
8590. Please wear your favorite beach shirt to honor our surfer
boy, and please bring a lawn chair; carpooling is encouraged.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled fl ight
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there; I did not die.
(Mary Elizabeth Frye, 1932)
