Elementary sees its last
school year
By Zach Silva

Th e process of moving from the old
Harrison Elementary School building
to the new school just cleared its latest
hurdle: the school year.
“It’s been an exciting 18 months of
planning. Th ere have been all these
stages. Designing the building, break-
ing the ground, ordering furniture.
You know, deciding who goes in what
room, lots of fun stuff ,” said principal
Heidi Brown. “And then clearing the
last day with students in the old build-
ing was a big milestone.”
Th e typical last day of school feelings
from teachers, students and staff were
paired with the fact that the building at
1000 South 10th that was built in 1949
has now seen its last days as a school.
Th e South Lane School District has not
offi cially decided on what will be done
with this space.

Honoring Wesley
O
n Friday, June 15,
the community
at Lincoln Mid-
dle School honored the
memory of former student
Wesley Meadows who
passed away in Decem-
ber. Earlier this year,
Lincoln began a campaign
to beautify the school
grounds, including a
courtyard that vice-princi-
pal Emily Wren said would
be dedicated to Meadows.
Prior to his death, the
13-year-old had been
working towards a plan
that would allow him to
build a fence with staff at
Lincoln.
According to Wren,
Meadows’ friends ap-
proached the school’s ad-
ministration and request-
ed the opportunity to
build a fence in Meadow’s
honor. Both the fence and
a memorial stone were
unveiled last Friday.
Meadows was killed
while riding his bike
on Highway 99 north
of Cottage Grove. Last
week, free bike helmet
lights were distributed to
children in Cottage Grove
with organizers of the
program citing Meadows’
passing as a driving force
behind the desire to pro-
vide the free lights.

Tiered rates

Recent vote by
board solidifi es
policy instituted
last year
By Caitlyn May

Emerald People’s Utility
District board of directors
has voted to continue a sys-
tem of tiered rates based on
kilowatt usage.
Th e vote, which took
place Tuesday, June 12, so-
lidifi ed a policy instituted
last year. EPUD came un-
der fi re in January when
customers began seeing
higher monthly bills. At the
time, EPUD apologized,
explaining it had failed to
properly prepare custom-
ers for the change in bill-
ing that requires customers
who use more power to be
charged a higher price per
kilowatt than customers
who use less electricity.

Th e woman arrested for
breaking windows on the
storefront of Main Street
business Wolfclan Armory
has been released from police
custody and arraigned.
Laura Rose, 31, will return
to court in late July to face
charges related to fi rst-degree
criminal mischief.
Rose recently arrived in
Cottage Grove and, on Mon-
day, June 11, reportedly used
a fl ag pole located on Main
Street to break the front win-
dows of the Wolfclan Ar-
mory, which sells survival
gear, knives, tents and other
survivalist-themed items.
According to Cottage
Grove Police Chief Scott
Shepherd, aft er vandalizing
the shop, Rose then walked
across the street and sat on a
bench until local law enforce-
ment arrived.
At the time of her arrest,
local authorities confi rmed
she had the phone number
of the Civil Liberties Union
written on her arm.
Rose was arraigned on one
count of fi rst-degree crimi-
nal mischief. However, she
was booked in Cottage Grove
on the above charge as well
as disorderly conduct in the
second degree.
According to Shepherd,
Rose indicated her motive
for breaking the windows
was her understanding of the
reported connection between
the owners of the store, Jea-
nette and Al Laskey and their
