CHAMBER NEWSLETTER
Our Mission: Th e Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce promotes economic vitality through advocacy and collaboration with its members and the larger community.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
JUNE BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
Th ere is so much good news to report this month, it’s hard to know where to begin.
Last year, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of a local entrepreneur along with some organizational
support from the C.G. Community Development Corporation and RAIN Eugene, we launched the
Cottage Grove Business Challenge. I’m pleased to announce that there will be another Business
Challenge event this year! Several other business leaders expressed an interest in funding a future
business challenge so we think the prize money will be even better than last year! If you know of a
person or business who wants to support entrepreneurship and job creation in the Cottage Grove area,
please have them contact Travis Palmer at the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce. Details about
how to enter this year’s challenge will be released later this summer. A HUGE THANK YOU to Harold
Frazier from New Breed Seed Company for making this event possible!
Th e Oregon Gran Fondo took place last Saturday and with it, over 260 cyclists from as far away as the
Netherlands came to Cottage Grove to ride in what was recently ranked by granfondo.com as “one of
the top ten gran fondos” in the country. Th e ride organized by Mudslinger Events gets better each year
and continues to promote our community as a great destination for cycling. Th is is a highly sought-
aft er demographic in the tourism industry due to the positive economic impact that communities
receive from cycling tourism.
Th e Chamber’s “Double Secret Society,” which is planning the Animal House 40 th Anniversary Reunion
and World’s Largest Toga Party is making great progress toward putting on one of the biggest events
that Cottage Grove has seen in decades. We’re collaborating with the Bohemian Film Festival which
will also launch the same weekend and tickets for both events are now available online. To get the best
“early bird price” for the toga party, be sure to buy your tickets before the price goes up on July 1 st . Plans
for the event include: showings of “National Lampoon’s Animal House”, showings of the documentary
“Animal House of Blues” which recently aired on OPB (and hit #1 in the ratings), an Animal House
themed parade, a “Food Fight For Lane County,” appearances from original cast & crew members such
as Otis Day, “Babs,” “Mandy Pepperidge” and others. Th e Double Secret Society and the Bohemian
Film Festival have a lot in store for the entire weekend so be sure to follow newsfeeds from the Chamber
to stay up to date on all of the great things in store for Animal House fans worldwide. As Otter and
Bluto said in the movie, “I think this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be
done on somebody’s part.” “And we’re just the guys to do it!” For information on the Toga Party or the
Bohemian Film Festival, contact the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce.
KEEPING YOU INFORMED - CHAMBER COMMITTEE BRIEFS

Th e legislative committee will continue working on eff orts to address the ongoing
issues around homeless people in the historic district. We plan to organize meetings to
bring together stakeholders in an eff ort to curb antisocial behavior that guests, business
owners, and residents fi nd disturbing.
Following the successful East Lane Commissioner candidates forum last month, we are
preparing to organize similar events for local races leading up to the November general
election.
Th e Legislative committee is looking to add two additional members. If interested, contact committee
chair Cameron Reiten at Cameron@knnd.com or 541-767-8861. Th e Legislative committee works to
inform and advocate for chamber members regarding local and state legislative issues that have an
impact on local economic conditions.
Tourism – Chair Julie Johns
Th e committee is reviewing current signage that guides visitors to various points of
interest around town such as our museums, covered bridges and bike paths. Restoration
work continues on the Cottage Grove Carousel and we look forward to a new attraction
to bring visitors to our community. Th e Covered Bridge Scenic Bikeway needs some
repair work done this summer that will require some detours. Please watch for future
notice of the areas of these detours.

Come for our season opener for some Rock /Blues by artist Peter Riley Osborne & Th e Truckstop
Handshakes.
Peter Riley Osborne is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Eugene, Oregon. Raised in Corvallis,
Oregon, Peter is a longtime fi xture in the Mid-Valley music scene, playing guitar for local country guitar
singer Gretchen Owens, a third of the trio You, Me & Pete, as well as various studio, recording, and live
projects.
“About seven years ago, I had fi gured my music career was pretty much spent. I had played in a few bands
in my early 20’s, but life took me in a diff erent direction and while I loved playing guitar, it was mostly just
something I did by myself at home. Aft er moving back to Oregon from Washington, a friend of mine named
Milo Skinner invited me to play music with him. I had not played in a band for almost seven years and
had not really practiced much, so I was understandably rusty. Th rough the encouragement of Milo and my
family, I began playing regularly again.”
“It was during one of my lunches with Milo and a few other musicians (mostly to work on songs or play
jazz, which I am terrible at or just talk about life and music) that I presented a new song I was working on
called Alright Th is Time. It was a fi ctional tale about coming back from tour and fi nding your stuff thrown
out on the lawn and your girlfriend/wife gone. It was kind of silly and cliché, but it got me off my literary
butt and back to writing music again. “
In 2015, Peter’s good friend and fantastic musician Milo Skinner passed away in a tragic plane accident.
Th is loss was the catalyst for Peter to complete a song that he and Milo were creating together, “Alright
Th is Time.”
Tell the membership “What’s New” with your business. Its good business to let other chamber members
and businesses know if you have a new manager/employee(s), new hours, an exciting event, or any news
you wish to share. You can drop off or mail your information to the chamber offi ce or email it to beth@
cgchamber.com.
Upon completion of the song, Peter realized that creating music was not just how he coped with loss
and expressed love, but something he shared with his wife and his daughters. Th is led him to start a
Kickstarter to fund the creation his debut solo album, homemade.
RIBBON CUTTING
“So I launched a ‘Kickstarter’ to fund an album project. Over 40 of the best donors in the world helped
me launch a project to create an album. As I sat in the studio to fi nish out the last few parts on my debut
album, I realized I didn’t want to stop making music.”
Wednesday, June 13 at 5:30pm - 914 S. 4th Street
Mark your calendars and join us for a ribbon cutting and welcome Dr. McMaster, DMD and his staff at
Chambers Bridge Dental to our community!
Chambers Bridge Dental want’s to say hello! And really look forward to meeting the great people of
Cottage Grove. Th ey are excited to be a part of the community. At Chambers Bridge Dental they treat
you like family! Th ey provide general & family dentistry and save room every day for emergencies.
Th ey have a lot of fun with their patients and each other; they know going to the dentist isn’t the
highlight of anyone’s day....but it doesn’t stop them from trying!
Homemade is a mix of all the aspects of Peter’s life. Love, loss, addiction, faith, and family all fi nd
their way into the nine tracks on this blues, rock, and country-infused album. Pure blues tracks like
Grace are slid between classic rock-sounding Blondes and funk-infl uenced Th e Way She Says My Name.
Homemade is an eclectic mix of musical infl uences, with the anchor of Peter’s voice, guitar playing, and
the amazing rhythm section of Peter Yaskovic (drums) and Lance Seiders (bass) who form the core of
Th e Truckstop Handshakes.]
