COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MAY 30, 2018
WOE Fair set to celebrate 86 years of tradition
ing the excitement and passion
in my daughter, as well as the
number of girls who have ap-
plied this year for the court, is
exactly what I was looking for.”
Schwieger says, for much
of its history, the fair has been
free. In recent years, competi-
tion for limited philanthrop-
ic sponsorships has become
much greater and resulted in a
small admission fee to pay for
the direct costs of producing
the three-day event. They need
more vendors, volunteers and
sponsors to ensure the success
of its 86th year.
This year’s highlights are:
The Gene Campbell Memorial
Lumberjack Show, the Habi-
tat for Humanity Weiner Dog
Races, the Cottage Grove Bible
Church’s Grand Prix Racing,
the Royal Court Crowning
Ceremony, live performances,
demonstrations, ten categories
of competitive exhibits, and
children’s activities, including
the popular pet parade featur-
ing a menagerie of critters.

L
ocal historians note
Cottage Grove has
had fairs, festivals
and exhibitions since the ear-
ly 1900s. Three of the oldest
annual celebratory traditions
still with us today are the
Western Oregon Exposition
(WEO) Family Fair (1932),
the rodeo (1947) and Bohe-
mia Mining Days (1959).
Today’s fast-paced, tech-
nology-driven lifestyles make
it especially challenging to
maintain the traditions deep-
ly rooted in America’s more
agrarian-oriented
society
of yesteryear. Yet this chal-
lenge has not deterred the
determined volunteers of the
WOE’s board of directors and
area coordinators, who annu-
ally produce the WOE Family
Fair and Lumberjack Show on
the third weekend of August;
this year’s fair is Aug. 17-19.
