TRACK from B1 throughout the race and clung on to a small group fi ghting for that second spot. “I defi nitely felt like I was go- ing too fast and I wasn’t going to have a kick,” said Talley. He had just enough in the last lap and was able to move up, passing a runner in the fi nal stretch to secure second place. Th e Lions also picked up points with a fi ft h-place fi nish by Hunter Hall in the javelin; a trio of seventh-place fi nishes by Juice Clafl in (110 hurdles), Takoda Brooks (pole vault) and 4x100 relay team (Woods, Claf- lin, Hayden Glenn and Cooper Ladd); and an eighth-place fi n- ish by Glenn (300 hurdles). Th e team fi nished with 47 points which put them in sixth place – and just short of a tro- phy for the top four teams – in a historically high-scoring team race. Since switching to the current six-classifi cation state model in 2007, the average third place team has fi nished with 47 points. Th e previous high amount of points for a sixth- place team for 4A boys was 37 and the average for the past 11 seasons has been 34. “Th e team points, it’s a little bit of a sting. We were shooting for a top four fi nish. And so as a team, it’s hard to use the word disappointed but that’s what we were shooting for,” said Knutson whose seniors were on his mind. “I just wish we could have gone out a little diff erently for them. And so they could have culminated their high school ca- reer with something a little bit, a little bit bigger to remember. We were there. We were in the hunt.” On the girls side, freshman Matty Ladd was the lone scorer for the team as she tied for fi ft h place in the high jump with her clearance of fi ve-feet.
