Creswell hosts community emergency preparedness fair
SAFETY FIRST —
Creswell's Public Safety
Committee sponsored the
city's first preparedness fair on
Saturday, May 19 at the Cobalt
Acvitity Center.
The event began at 10 a.m.
and ran until 1 p.m. with local
agencies assisting in the pre-
sentation. South Lane County
Fire and Rescue attended in
addition to the Lane County
Sheriff, South Lane County
Life Flight, the Eugene Army
National Guard and the Cre-
swell Teen CERT. Attendess
learned the importance of be-
ing prepared in an area set to
experience a major earthquake
in the coming years as well as
everyday safety tips surround-
ing communication after a
disaster, fire prevention and
other dangerous scenarios.

the group still has to hire the
full-time librarian and two part-
time employees it budgeted for.
“We need to plan and provide
what we said we would which
is a full service library for the
community,” she added.
Th e Friends of the Mildred
Whipple Library don’t plan to
open the doors again until Jan-
uary of 2019 but this summer,
they’ll begin making good on
the seat two years ago, losing by
a handful of votes, came in with
just under 20 percent of the vote
while Tim Laue (9.84 percent)
and James Barber (6.85 percent)
rounded out the top fi ve. Frank
King pulled 1.42 percent of the
13,126 votes counted as of Mon-
day night.
Williams had earned the
endorsement of Lane Coun-
ty Sheriff Byron Trapp and the
Oregon Small Business Associ-
ation. He campaigned as “Gary
from 3rd St.” and on a platform
focused on helping to ensure
elderly residents received the re-
sources they need.

be on the november ballot. Th e
winner will be seated as East
Lane Commissioner.

Two volunteers, with the help
of grant funding, will provide
a summer reading program;
something the community
didn’t have last year as the li-
brary sat locked. Th e library
board, made up mostly of peo-
ple who had campaigned for the
tax district and served as volun-
teers for the Friends of the Li-
brary group, will begin planning
meetings, open to the public.
According to Johns, there’s
also talk of eventually incorpo-
rating a visitor information cen-
ter in the library for the string
of tourists who come through
town asking about covered
bridges and good lunch spots.
Th e city of Drain will be pro-
viding maintenance for the
building as well as handling the
utilities and internet but there’s
still along list for the library
board to contend with. So long,
in fact, Johns said they’ll be
meeting with their attorney and
the city in the coming weeks to
see, what exactly, the next step
is.
“We passed it,” she said. “It
was so exciting and the it was
like, ‘Ok what’s next?’”
