Beautiful day for a bike ride: Grovers enjoy the blooms

n Saturday, May
12, about 65 people
attended the Bikes
to Blooms event at Bake
Stewart Park at Dorena Lake.
The event was co-sponsored
by the following partners:
Coast Fork Willamette
Watershed Council, U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers,
U.S. Forest Service, Walama
Restoration Project, Al
Kennedy High School, and
the Native Plant Society of
Oregon. Activities included
guided walks about birds,
wildflowers and pollinators,
as well as educational booths.
During the event, a structure
designed to shelter native
bees was installed near the
pollinator garden at Bake
Stewart Park.
Attendees were treated
to sights along what the
Willamette Watershed
Council described as "rare
and remnant prairie and
oak habitats along
Dorena Lake."
Picnic lunches
were welcomed and
several educational
opportunities were
available including
an invasive plant
workshop, a family-
friendly walk
through the area and
a pollinator walk
with students from
Al Kennedy High
School lending a
hand during some of
the demonstrations.
Other activities
included a
morning bird
walk, stewardship
opportunities, educational
booths and guided wildflower
walks.
The event marked the
chance for Cottage Grove
residents to experience the
blooming of wildflowers for
the season.
