2B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MAY 16, 2018 Eagles and Elks qualify for state By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com Elkton's head coach Bill Shaw sends Brad Doudna home during their second game on Friday. B ASEBALL continued from B1 fi rst game as the Warriors put- ting together a hitting clinic to run away with a 12-0 win in fi ve innings. In the third inning alone, North Douglas scored seven runs off of four hits and fi ve walks. Th e team fi nished with 14 hits in the game includ- ing two from Austin Frieze, Koldan Frieze, Tyler Kallinger and Carson Burris. Caleb Parks was walked three times and had two stolen bases. Burris pitched four innings and struck out fi ve batters. Koldan Frieze pitched in the fi ft h inning and struck out two batters to end the game. While the Elks lost the game, Shaw was comfortable conced- ing the win knowing he could throw his ace, Luzier, back on the mound for game two in the hopes of a better result. It worked out in the fi nal game as it was Elkton’s turn to 10-run their opponent as they won 11-1. With Luzier on the mound for the third time in as many games, he, much like the fi rst game, found success and was able to control the game from the start. North Douglas was limited to just fi ve hits and Lu- zier struck out three batters. Freshman Cooper Peters, the seventh hitter in the line- up, started the inning off for Elkton with a double to deep center fi eld. “Th e book on the bottom of my lineup is they’re all fresh- man. If you survive the top half of my lineup, the second half is out,” said Shaw. “But my freshman all of a sudden they start to believe a little bit. You know, they see other people hit the ball. I think Cooper (Peters) hits one and all of a sudden – if Cooper hits that I can hit that.” Aft er Peters’ double, fi ve of the next six batters all hit sin- gles for the Elks and the bats were rolling as the team recorded seven runs in the inning. Aft er an impassioned plea from Davis between innings, North Douglas was able to get one run on the board. But it was not enough as the Elks once again found success with the bats and with hits from Doudna, Jarrett Wiliams and Jase Billman were able to score four more runs in the inning to secure a 10-run lead and lock in a victory. “Man, you can’t say enough about those kids,” said Shaw. To wrap the regular season, the Elks will face Oakridge, a team that currently rests in third place with a one-game advantage in the standings on Elkton. “So we need one from Oakridge to put (North Doug- las) behind us because we won the head-to-head matchup. If we get two from Oakridge, all of a sudden crazy stuff starts to happen,” said Shaw. For North Douglas, the road to the league playoff s is not any easier as they now face Oak- land. Th e Oakers are current- ly second in league and are a game out of fi rst place. “Well, you got to cliché it and go one game at a time. And we’ve got to realize the top 10 teams in the state we’ve ei- ther beaten them or we’ve been right there at the fi nish line,” said Davis. “And we’ve just got to fi nd it within us to fi nish them and not be snake bit all the time.” Last Saturday the Elkton track and fi eld team competed at dis- tricts at Sutherlin High School while the North Douglas/Yoncalla team competed at the 2A level in Lost River. Th e Elks saw underclassmen Margaret Byle and Sadie Olson both qualify for the state meet. Byle, a freshman, is headed to Hay- ward aft er taking fi rst in the 100. Heading into the meet, she has the second fastest time in all of 1A. Byle took third in both the 200 and 400. Olson found success as she won the discus with a throw of 104 feet, 5 inches and took second in shot put. In Lost River, the Eagles quali- fi ed their girls 4x100 relay team of Kaleigh Soto, Samantha Baker, Rlie Jo Olds and Justice Cox. Shaunasi Hardy is headed to state aft er fi n- ishing second in javelin. On the boys’ side, Laaron Lopez was the lone qualifi er as he won the high jump at 5-10.
