CADET PROGRAM READIES STUDENTS TO BECOME TEACHERS

Teacher Cadet is a class led by science
teacher, Gerrian Walker, at Cottage Grove
High School which prepares students for a
career in education. This class encourag-
es academically talented, high-achieving,
high school students with exemplary inter-
personal and leadership skills to consider
teaching as a career. Throughout the year,
cadets examine their own strengths and ar-
eas for improvement as learners. They ex-
amine the styles and needs of learners and
the growth and development of students,
as well as hands -on experiences in class-
rooms. By observing teachers and working
with children, they get a feel of what it’s re-
ally like in this profession.
Senior Shyenne Jones is a cadet because
of her love for kids and desire to have chil-
dren of her own one day, both in her class-
room and in her home.
“As long as I can remember I’ve wanted
to be a mom,” said Jones, “I believe what I
learn in this class will help me be a better
teacher in the future as well as a better mom
one day.”
Jones loves the hands -on fi eld experienc-
es they get like traveling to elementary and
middle schools to interact with kids from
kindergarten to ninth grade.
“Reading with the fi rst graders has been
really fun. They love the rhyming and most
of the kids I had read back to me, could al-
most recite the book by the end of it,” said
Jones.
This class not only prepares students for
a teaching career, but also teaches skills in
leadership and how to be speak in front of
others. For cadet Shaye Fuller, becoming a
teacher has actually never been her calling,
“I don’t actually like kids. I took this class
for the leadership experience,” admitted
Fuller, “I have learned to not be afraid to
speak in front of people, and how to teach
basic lessons based on what the audiences’
needs are.”
Preparing instead for a career in Zoology,
the study and behavior of animals, Fuller
sees nothing wrong with taking part as a ca-
det even if teaching is not your plan.
“If you think being a cadet wouldn't ben-
efi t you just because you may not want to
teach, my advice would be to try it. You
may get a different view,” said Fuller. “It’s
not all about kids, it’s a lot more than that.”
Driven by her passion for music, Jennifer
Simons is planning on teaching and is lean-
ing towards working with middle school or
high school students.
“I want to be a music teacher so I can
share it with other people,” stated Simons,
“Music is a part of us. I believe we need it
for us to be human.”
Being a Teacher Cadet has helped Simons
to explore her abilities as an educator.
“This class has taught me to think out-
side the box in the classroom and not wor-
ry about having specifi c guidelines on how
to get something done,” said Simons. “I’ve
also learned to explore new solutions you
wouldn't think of.”
Bohemia fi rst grade teachers, Mrs. Tra-
cy Stevens and Mrs. Jill Middleton, were
two of the teachers who hosted the cadets
in their classrooms at Bohemia Elementary.
“The kids were so excited,” said Middle-
ton. “The high schoolers are such role mod-
els for them, and they can tell about their
experiences. It takes a lot of guts to come
in and read to these kids you’ve never met.”
Unsure at fi rst, Stevens declined the ca-
dets multiple times, thinking her kids were
not ready for the extra excitement, but, she
was pleasantly surprised.
“The kids were all engaged,” said Ste-
vens. “The extra hands helped me out a lot.”
Stevens sees this it as an opportunity for

the high schoolers to fi nd out if this is really the career path they
want to take.
“This is a great way to decide what you want to do instead of
waiting until college,” said Stevens. “Rather than not knowing if
you want to be a teacher.”

It shows them an experience of having a real job and responsibil-
ities. I think it’s a good program but I think we can expand it and
make it better,” said Finley.
The hosting program is a school-year long job opportunity and is
looking for driven and eager individuals to come out and sign up. If
you are interested in the hosting program come sign up in Roberts’
offi ce.

Dahlen, has been awarded
Student of the Month for April,
by the Bohemia Sunrisers
Kiwanis. Faryn is an active
volunteer at Cottage Grove High
School and in the community
in organizations such as Key
Club and Outdoor School, and
in the Lion Pride pageant. Her
scholastic
awards
include
high honors and excellence
in Biology and Spanish; and
she has lettered in soccer and
track. Faryn plans to attend the
Robert D. Clark Honors College
of the University of Oregon next
year with a goal to eventually
become a family practitioner
and “help people live longer,
healthier, happier lives.”
