LINCOLN GIVES BACK
Lincoln Middle School takes
great pride in their efforts to care
for and support local and glob-
al organizations. For the 11th
year in a row, seventh graders,
as part of their study of Africa,
spearheaded a fundraising drive
for Africa Bridge, a nonprofi t
organization dedicated to help
children and empower Tanzani-
an communities to protect, sup-
port, and care for orphaned and
vulnerable children. Due to the
high need of assistance locally,
all money raised by students
was split between Africa Bridge
and Cottage Grove's own Com-
munity Sharing. Seventh grad-
ers set goals, brought in do-
nations, sold pencils at local
elementary schools, and even
participated in three days of Fill
the Boot in the Lincoln parking
lot. They were able to raise over
$3,000 ($1,500 for each worthy
cause). L.M.S. seventh graders
have proved once again how
caring they are. Together they
are working on building a glob-
al caring community.

Hosting program at CGHS
provides work experience
At Cottage Grove High School (CGHS) we have small job op-
portunities available for our students. A popular opportunity to earn
money and introduce them into the work fi eld is hosting. Hosting

is where students help run all sporting events such as soccer, bas-
ketball and track. There are three people who are the leaders of
hosting; the athletic director Gary Roberts and two students, Halle Peterson and Tyra Gordon. Also
involved with the program is career and college advisor, Nick Finley.
Hosting is helping students launch into their passion for their future jobs, and it’s an opportunity that
most students don’t realize they have.
Head host, Halle Petersen, says, “I like hosting because I feel like I'm helping the school. Being in a
leadership role this year was nice because I was able to learn skills for my future.”
The other head host, Tyra Gordon, says, “Hosting has been a great experience, and I feel like we have
been super fortunate to have hardworking and cooperative hosts. Our numbers of hosts are pretty low
this year, so sometimes it can be diffi cult to fi nd people to work. However, with that being said most of
them do have pretty fl exible schedules and are willing to pick up extra shifts.”
This year, as Gordon said, the hosting program has had a shortage of students coming out for the job,
but students have volunteered from the high school when the program has needed help. Most CGHS
students who work in the hosting program have another job outside of the program. For example, Gor-
don has a job outside of hosting and is involved in many other activities. The hosting program is willing
to work around students’ schedule and allows ample opportunities to allow students to earn money.
“I think that this looks great for college applications/work experience on resumes. It has been nice
to play such an important role for athletic events to run as smoothly as they do,” according to Gordon.
Nick Finley has taken a role in this program by supervising the students when Roberts is unavailable
and offering the students a helping hand if they have any questions or concerns about the ongoing
activities as a host.
“I think it’s a great program. I think it teaches young women and men responsibility and punctuality.
