CGHS Athletic Department holds second annual auction

With Cottage Grove dark blue and gold deco-
rations hanging around the armory, the Friends of
Cottage Grove Athletics hosted their annual auc-
tion on Saturday night.
The funds from the event go to the different
teams at Cottage Grove High School. Last year
the event raised $25,000 and with that money,
the group was able to buy new tarps for the base-
ball and softball fi elds and give each team equal
amounts of the remaining funds.
“Everybody that thought this was just like a
football event or basketball event, that is abso-
lutely not the case,” said Brogan Weybright who
is president of the booster club. “This is for the
high school athletic program. For next year, we
don’t know yet what we’re going to do with the
funds but it will be easy to spend. We’re going to
divvy it up like we did and then whatever the cap-
ital improvement project that we need to support,
we’ll support.”
As each team fundraises to raise money for
specifi c team needs, Weybright is hoping that the
funds from this event can help make it easier for
each of the teams.
“There’s no money for them so they’re out hav-
ing to hustle to play ball. That’s unfortunate. When
I was a kid that wasn’t the case,” he said.

Gary Roberts, who serves as the secretary of the
dinner auction committee, also sees a need that the
auction can address.
“Our school district does the best job that they
can with funding us but when it comes to some of
the larger items that sports programs need… just ar-
en’t covered in our athletic budget. I mean our teams
fundraise for everything,” he said.
While the group is unsure of what their big-tick-
et item will be this year, there is no shortage of op-
tions. Roberts noted that there have been discussions
around wrestling mats and volleyball nets which
have both been around since the high school was re-
modeled. The group is also thinking of a scoreboard
for when the pool is remodeled.
It was the second year in a row of the auction
event and the fi rst year since the booster club is now
separate from working with South Lane School Dis-
trict (SLSD). SLSD cut ties because of the auction-
ing of fi rearms at the event.
“It was because we did have a fi rearm raffl e for
the glock, for pistols and we did have a hunting rifl e
involved in the auction. So, that’s a part of it. But the

2018 Victory Visit At Shriner’s Children Hospital

Portland, Oregon- Drivers and personnel
from both Cottage Grove Speedway and
Willamette Speedway were part of a special
event on Wednesday, April 4th at Shriner’s
Children Hospital in Portland. They would
visit with children that were suffering from
various illnesses that required them to be
hospitalized. It was a perfect opportunity
for the kids to receive a rare opportunity
to meet real race drivers face to face. The
event was dubbed as the Victory Visit and
was the second consecutive year it has taken
place.
“Last year we just had drivers from just
Willamette Speedway come up,” comment-
ed event organizer Buzz Mitchell, who is
a longtime race fan and track sponsor at
the Lebanon 1/3-mile facility, “this winter
I ended up to talking to Heather (Boyce)
down at Cottage Grove and wanted to in-
clude her too. I have a lot of friends from
down there and I wanted to make sure they
were involved.”
In addition to meeting with patients, the
visitors were also given a full tour of the fa-
cility. After everything was said and done
all parties involved would end the day with
smiles on their faces. It proves just how
wonderful and caring individuals in the rac-
ing community are towards their fans and
the public.
“It is a trip that I look forward to every
year,” said Willamette Speedway Race Di-
rector, Jeremy Means, “We had a lot more
drivers from Willamette this time versus
last. We even had more kids to see this year
too which was very cool. A lot of the kids
that I interacted with in the activity room
were girls and having female drivers there
put a big smile on all their faces.”
“I want to send a big thanks to Buzz
Mitchell for inviting members of the Cot-
tage Grove Speedway to be a part of such a
moving event,” stated Heather Boyce, Gen-
eral Manager of CGS, “I can’t wait to come
back next year because it was so incredible
to see all the kids’ reactions to visiting with
all the drivers. It’s so heartwarming to see
their lives touched in such a positive man-
ner.”
Cottage Grove Speedway is slated for
their second race of the season on Saturday,
April 14th while Willamette Speedway will
have a launch their 2018 campaign on the

Cottage Grove does not issue a business license other than a used merchandise license for sec-
ond-hand stores and another for taxi services. Any law the council passed barring businesses based on
ideaology, Boone said, would be struck down and taxpayer money the possible source of funds paid to
fund judgements against the city.
Resident Annie O'Dean addressed the council and urged the members to view the Wolfclan Armory
website she called "concerning."
Venice Mason, who attended last month's protest and says she's since attempted to apologize to
Wolfclan for any of her actions that may have been confrontational, told the council that the business
represented groups that were a danger to portions of Cottage Grove's population.
After his release from prison, Laskey was photographed with a known white supremacy group.
"I'll cut to the chase on this," councilor Garland Burback said Monday night. "Just don't shop there."

other part of it is it’s an adult function serving adult
beverages. So, it’s not just the fi rearms, it’s also the
adult beverage aspect to it which makes it better for
all of us if it’s a booster club event and not a school
district sponsored event,” Roberts. “It’s very good to
have a separation.”
“And the fi rearm thing, some people have an issue
with it. It’s part of Oregon, it’s what we do. People
hunt, people fi sh. This is our community, it’s not
about school shootings and I want people to know
that,” said Weybright. “We don’t want to sweep it
under the rug. I want it to be known that we support
the outdoors.”
As of this print, the fi nal tally for funds had not
yet been calculated. The group was hoping to raise
$30,000 at this year’s event.
“Year two went better than year one and year three
is going to go better than year two,” said Roberts.
On Saturday, April 7, Cottage Grove Police received a call report-
ing "noise" at Mandy's Meds in downtown Cottage Grove.
When police arrived on the scene, they found a broken window.
"Normally they don't get in those places because they're pretty
well fortifi ed," said CGPD Detective Doug Skaggs of the break-
in. An arrest was made but due to the suspects at, reported as 17,
CGPD is not releasing a name.
