COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL MARCH 21, 2018
CG T RACK
continued from B1
Last Friday, the teams had
their fi rst taste of competition
in a squad meet that was not
focused on specifi c times ran
or distances thrown but rather
to see where the team is at in
relation to one another at this
early part of the year. While
typical running events such as
the 100 and 4 x 400 were ran,
also on the schedule were the
600, 300 and 1200 relay. With
the captains serving as coaches,
they had to make sure that each
member of their team participat-
ed in at least three events.
“I think they probably learned
more today than they did in the
draft because some of them are
coming up to me saying, ‘hey,
so-and-so is not here today.’
Welcome to being a coach.
You better fi gure out how to fi ll
those spots. It gives them a little
perspective,” said Knutson.
As athletes across all teams
cheered each other on and tried
new events, there was not the
feel of agony of doing a time
trial but rather the joy of com-
petition.
“I liked it because it’s also
about doing things you hav-
en’t done before,” said senior
Hayden Glenn, captain of team
2EZ. “People were running
4x4s that usually do just the 100
or something. Or distance run-
ners were doing the 100. It goes
either way and it’s just fun to go
through the process with people
and get to know them also.”
Rhea Florez (left), Halle Peterson (center) and Dylan Carlton (right) compete
in a relay.
Jared Simmons competes in discus on Friday.
