By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com It was a moment to stop and smell the ros- es and celebrate the local Rosie the Riveters last Friday. Huddled under a pair of pop-up canopies, over 50 people gathered at the women’s vet- eran memorial in Springfi eld for a ceremo- nial planting of the Rosie the Riveter rose to celebrate the women who worked during World War II. “It’s just kind of amazing that so many people are interested in this era because we’re talking about the third generation away, you know,” said 95-year old Cot- tage Grove resident and Rosie the Riveter member Opal Nelson. “So it amazes me that there is so much interest in it. Well, actual- ly, people seem to realize that World War II was the last, I don’t know how to put it, the last confl ict that made sense.” Nelson, who is often speaking to different groups about the importance of the work at Student walk-outs set for today By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com March 14 has been identifi ed as the fi rst of several student-led walkouts calling on Congress to limit access to assault rifl es and to tighten gun control legislation. The day falls exactly one month after the deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 students and faculty. In Cottage Grove, the South Lane School District has issued a set of guidelines for students and teachers who want to take part in the walkout. The guidelines, according to South Lane Communications Coordinator Garrett Bridgens, are to be used by individual school administrators to communicate with staff, students and parents. Students who choose to walk out today will receive an unexcused absence and must remain on campus, according to the guidelines. By July 1, the South Lane School District (SLSD) will be on its third superintendent in less than a year. During a special meeting of the South Lane school board on Thursday March 8, the board announced that acting superintendent Kyle Tucker will not be applying for the interim superintendent po- sition posted earlier this week. Current superintendent Krista Parent is set to retire on June 30. Thursday’s meeting was aimed at giving the community the op- portunity to weigh in on the qualities and qualifi cations the board adopts for the interim superintendent search. At a separate meeting in February, the board made a motion to begin the search for an interim superintendent who would be in place by July 1 of this year and remain in the position through June 30 of 2019. Simultaneous- ly, the board would move toward hiring a long-term superintendent who would be hired for the 2019-2020 school year. Approximately 25 people attended Thursday’s meeting including at least 10 individuals who work for South Lane School District. Heather Bridgens, principal of Bohemia Elementary School, said she would like qualities such as sincerity, transparency and trust to be considered as well as an individual who was dedicated to teaching “the whole child.” Bridgens' top suggested qualities were echoed by South Lane Mental Health’s Valeria Clarke, who also suggested someone with experience in trauma-informed education, and fellow SLSD employee Ricardo Flores who added support and understanding of Measure 98 and internships to the list. Other qual- ities suggested included the ability to delegate, responsive to com- plaints, a focus on academics rather than athletics and an individual with experience with districts “in crisis.” In January, controversy surrounding Parent came to a head when Please see WALKOUT PG.
