Cottage Grove 541-767-BOWL Great Fun! Great Food! Great Times! MACAULEY BIKING they can believe in them- selves, they have the ability to achieve. This has been some- thing that has always been en- grained in Macauley. “My mom instilled that early in my life. You never say you can’t. Can’t was not a word. And then honestly, honestly, when my daugh- ter passed away, I really just wanted to lay down. And one of the things that my daugh- ter, with as much wisdom as she had in her 18 years, was that she said, ‘Mom you nev- er give up.’” Macauley’s daughter, Sum- er Solesbee, died in a car crash on her way to church during her senior year at Cot- tage Grove High School in 2003. “And she was training. She could out bench me, oh my gosh. She weighed like 105 pounds and could bench 135 raw. And she was only 4-foot- 11. She was amazing,” said Maccauley. “It took a few years for me to step out. And I’m so thank- ful because I heard her words say to me, 'you can do any- thing.' And then I honestly, I give God the glory. He’s my higher power. And I also give my family genetics, my Scot- tish blood. I’m a warrior.” With her warrior spirit guiding the way, Macauley then continued to teach her classes, began to get into weightlifting more seriously and more than anything else, wanted to build up all those people around her. “What drives me is that everyday I wake up and my eyes are open and I’m breath- ing. That’s what drives me. There’s something that I can be happy about.” “That event that happened, that was one of my former stu- dents actually. I was really dev- astated by that,” said Watt who teaches gardening at Lincoln Middle School. “It was awful. Couldn’t have happened to a more wonderful kid. He really was amazing.” Doug Lyda, a fi refi ghter for South Lane Fire and Rescue Warriors, Elks, and Eagle named to all-league team (SLFR), attended the meeting not because he is interested in biking but because he is work- ing to raise money to give bike lights to students around South Lane. Lyda’s goal for SLFR is to raise $15,000 and the group has already raised $6,000. The lights that they would be giving out are LED lights that are USB rechargeable and going to be around $60 each. In addition to bike safety, the group is also focused on being present in the community. One way this has manifested itself is that the group received funding from the city for a bike main- tenance station that will b e in- stalled on the Row River Trail. It has not been decided where or when this installation will take place. To learn more about upcom- ing meetings or rides, contact cgcycling1@gmail.com. By Zach Silva the fi rst team.
