With both teams fi nishing 9-1 in league play and having their lone league loss come at the hands of the other, the teams met at the neutral site of Elmira High School on Tuesday night. In the fi rst meeting between the teams it was the Lions over- powering the Tigers inside as they won 43-33. In the second meeting, Junction City shifted into a zone-defense throughout the contest that guided them to a 44-36 victory. It was the Tigers relying on the same strategy on Tuesday as they packed the lane and ensured that anytime a Cottage Grove post touched the ball they were met by two, or even three, Junction City defenders. “We were not aggressive enough on the perimeter when they were sagging off on us,” said Cottage Grove head coach Kevin Yoss. “I thought we needed to attack more and we told them to attack more but we’re not used to doing that and didn’t, obviously.” For the Lions, it was pos- session after possession of the ball getting stuck on the pe- rimeter as they looked inside for an opening. In the opening quarter of play this hesitancy manifested itself in six straight turnovers to start the game for Cottage Grove. The Tigers poured it on early and if Cot- tage Grove’s Ema Gardner had not come up with four blocks in the quarter, they could have had a bigger lead. A three-pointer a three-pointer at the buzzer pro- vided them with a comfortable 12-4 advantage after one. The Lions offensive trepida- tion melted away in the second quarter as they attacked the bas- ket and got into the lane. With Reilly Kelty rolling to the rim and Tara Child getting to the lane and a Madison Bethke three-pointer, Cottage Grove put in a 12-0 run to take a 18-14 lead at halftime. “The bottom line is we just had to make adjustments,” said Junction City head coach Liz Bolton. “And as soon as they caught on to what we were do- ing, we would adjust. And you know, I give a lot of credit to the kids for having to handle three and four adjustments on the fl y and being smart enough to be able to handle that. I’m not sure with another group I could have done that.” As Cottage Grove once again became ambivalent with the ball, Junction City quickly im- posed their will and opened the quarter on a 15-2 run led by Alexa Norris who fi nished the game with 20 points. “[Alexa] had the game of her life. I don’t think I’ve seen that, I mean, she played an amazing game on both sides of the ball. She effected the game in such a way on both sides of the ball that I’m just so incredibly proud of her,” said Bolton. “I haven’t seen a kid take over a game like that in our ex- perience yet this year.” The Lions refused to go away easily and mounted a comeback that got them to within three points during the fourth quarter but still struggling to get the ball to the spots they wanted, Junc- tion City was able to see the game out. “I think they just got com- placent with what was going on and just since we haven’t been doing it that much they just fell back on what they’ve been do- ing all year and that was not at- tacking,” said Yoss. Possible activ- ities discussed included group rides, support of the Row River Trail, bicycle safety promotion bicycle repair and maintenance classes, bicycle tourism promo- tion, placement of bicycle repair stations in key locations and advocacy for a “bike friendly” community. It was a game of free throws in the fourth quarter as Baker went 12-of-14 from the line including six-of- seven from freshman point guard Gabe Gambleton to seal the victory for the Bull- dogs. Baker will now face Marshfi eld on the road next Saturday. “After the game, we didn’t even talk about the Baker game in the locker-room. We talked about the season be- cause it was very emotional.
