South Lane School District has joined Corvallis, Lake Oswego and Woodburn as one of
the four schools recognized with the distinction of AP (Advanced Placement) Honor Roll
for the Collect Board's 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll.
It's the school district's third straight year claiming the prize which recognizes schools
that have increased access to AP classes and maintained or increased the rate at which stu-
dents scored a three of high on the AP exam.
In a letter addressed to South Lane Superintendent Krista Parent, state superintendent
Colt Gill said, "Your district’s commitment to expanding and ensuring access to Advanced
Placement courses, as well as your outstanding student performance data, secured your spot
on the College Board’s 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll.
South Lane is one of 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada leading the way in AP
course access and completion. Your accomplishments are inspirational, demonstrating what
can be achieved when school communities work together toward a common goal."
Currently, Cottage Grove offers eight AP classes and 20 courses that can be taken for
college credit under the state's College Now program.
SCHOOL BOARD WRAP-UP
Plans show a possible layout for the community pool once renovations are completed.
A
fter a pool committee began the process of fi guring out how to renovate Cottage Grove’s
Warren H. Daughtery Aquatic Center in early November, the group is now nearing the fi nal
stages of fi guring out how to spend the $5.1 million bond.
The committee, made up of community members, is facing a couple key decisions for how to pro-
ceed. Throughout the process the issue has been, and still remains, fi nding a way to update the pool
with the $5.1 million. The updates to the pool, locker rooms and future renovations has been priced out
to be as much as $10 million.
With the guidance of the architects, the committee has now been presented with an option that costs
$5.4 million and another that costs $5.7 million. The group is hoping to get the more expensive upgrade
but will be dependent on community support.
“We have 5.1 million in the bond and we know Kris Woodard has been out working very hard to
bridge the gap. He has $200,000 in absolutely fi rm commitments. With a little bit softer commitments,
we’re probably to $350,000. So we feel like $5.4 [million] is doable but we feel like on some level, this
is kind of the minimum we’re looking at,” said South Lane superintendent Krista Parent at Monday’s
school board meeting.
Woodard has been working with a pool task force to raise money for the pool and in December put
out a letter hoping to get the community on board.
The key expense that differentiates the two current pool plans is the renovation of the locker room
that the board sarcastically described as being “vintage.”
“The committee, would really like to get us to scheme B,” noted Parent.
In both versions, the locker rooms will be getting new plumbing, electrical and will be cleaned up. In
the cheaper version, the locker rooms will be contained to the space that they are currently in.
In the more expensive model that the pool committee is pushing for, there would be additional space
added to the locker rooms. Included in this space would be multiple family restrooms, a community
classroom and more area in each locker room space.
What is agreed upon by the pool committee is that the new pool will be the regulation 25 yards long,
so that it will be able to host state certifi ed competitions. What is up for discussion is whether there will
be seven lanes that are eight feet wide or eight lanes that are seven feet, eight inches wide. The differ-
ences come down to recreational swimmers against competitive swimmers. The competitive swimmers
prefer the wider lanes. The width cannot be increased due to pillars on each side of the pool that are in
place to stabilize the building in the event of an earthquake.
While the lanes will have to be decided upon, the group is in agreement on the pool as a whole. The
pool will also feature steps that make the pool more accessible and are a place for swim lessons to take
place.
While the $5.1 million is for the upcoming renovations, the school district also has long term plans
for a 1,000 square foot warm water teaching well when “funding is available” noted Parent.
On Monday, Parent met with representatives from PeaceHealth at the current pool to show them
the space. PeaceHealth is potentially interested in helping fund a warm water therapy pool that would
provide classes and help assist with rehabilitation. This is in effort with PeaceHealth’s community
wellness and prevention program.
The addition of both an outdoor and indoor hot tub are in plans for the future.

Outdoor School
Parent reported that the school district received all of the outdoor school dollars that they requested.
Bohemia, which has been without an outdoor school program, will have one this year and was allocated
$13,925. Harrison received $18,435 and Dorena, London and Latham which do their outdoor school
together received $4,315, $4,290 and $3,570 respectively.
“This year, all of our kids will get this experience,” said Parent.
ALICE Training
Last Monday, during a South Lane inservice day, 350 individuals from the school district met at
Cottage Grove High School to go through Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate (ALICE) training
that deals with what to do in the event of a school shooting.
Offi cers from the Cottage Grove Police Department, Lane County Sherriff’s Offi ce, Eugene Police
Department, Springfi eld Police Department and a couple of civilian trainers led the groups through a
morning and afternoon session.
“It’s a fantastic training, it’s really sad to do it but I think it makes the issue real to our staff and I
guess, the next step is we teach kids how to stay alive,” said school board member Jerry Settelmeyer.
Teacher of the Year
Lincoln Middle School's Pat Ware and Harrison Elementary teacher Sarah Drew will be honored
during the Chamber of Commerce banquet later this month for their achievements during the 2016-
2017 school year and over the course of their careers in South Lane School District. Ware mans the
Lion Pride Room at Lincoln meant to give students the opportunity to talk through their problems while
Drew was commended on her committment to students.
