Construction at the new Harrison Elementary School continues through the winter with the building scheduled to welcome students in the fall of 2018. The school is being funded with nearly $24 million in bond money approved by
voters last year though costs have continued to climb due to an increase in demand and a nearly one percent per month escalation of prices.

The LAST THURSDAY of every
month from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
When Mary Jo Davis got Public Works and
Development Director Faye Stewart on the
phone, she gave him an earful.
Davis owns Rosebud, the children’s consign-
ment store on Main St. She was in her store ear-
ly last month when she saw city trucks pull up,
lights fl ashing.
“I asked them what was going on and they
said they were removing all of these parking
spots,” Davis said.
The decision to remove up to four parking
spots from the corner of Hwy. 99 and Main was
approved by the city council weeks before, cit-
ing safety concerns and a prior project complet-
ed by the Oregon Department of Transportation
to update the intersection.
The move would leave Davis and other Main
St. Businesses with little, if no parking for their
store fronts without any notice.
“I called the Main St. Coordinator and got
a call back from Faye Stewart,” Davis said.
Stewart informed Davis that the city was no
longer going to take as many parking spaces,
but would need to remove some.
“I understand that fi rst parking space, it is
dangerous but no one informed us. No one told
us,” Davis said.
Cottage Grove City Manager Richard Mey-
ers said the issue was discussed at a city council
meeting prior to the city taking any action.
Davis took her own action.
She started a petition that earned 13 signa-
tures from business owners on Main St. and
reads in part, “The fi rst block parking west of
99, after the $3 million and a couple of years,
was not declared unsafe. This project that had
city of Cottage Grove and Oregon State DOT
professionals doing this project. Then without
contacting the four businesses directly affected
the city government decided to eliminate the
parking in front of their businesses.”
Erin Lauraine, owner of ATA Martial Arts,
located next to Rosebud, said she signed the
petition in the spirit of communication. She
said she understood the current parallel park-
ing was dangerous and agreed, partially, with
the city but also understood the need for com-
munication, saying she thought the city should
