City council wrap-up
Row River Rd.
A pedestrian crossing for
Row River Rd. was given the
green light after the bid process
wrapped up Monday night.
Pacifi c Excavation came in
with the lowest bid for the proj-
ect at $90,917. However, due
to a clerical error, the bid can-
not be awarded for seven days
while the council waits for pos-
sible appeals by other bidders.
The project will include a
lighted crossing and an island at
the south property of Chevron
Station across from AutoZone.
Councilman Jake Boone said
the crossing was needed after he
watched several older residents
attempt to cross the busy street
with an outlet to Insterstate-5.
Sports mania
The Cottage Grove varsity
soccer team, volleyball team
and football team were honored
along with the local Grange
for their achievements this
week. The volleyball and soc-
cer team came in sixth in state
while the football team made it
all the way, bringing home the
state championship. Mayor Jeff
Gowing addressed the over-
fl owing chamber, saying, "As
a Cottage Grove alumni, I am
very proud to be up here honor-
ing you."
Traffi c light
Councilman Bob Ehler raised
concerns during the council
comments portion of the meet-
ing about a traffi c light at Hwy.
99. "I can't get through it with-
out it turning yellow and one
day I'm going to be down here
screaming about why that light
hasn't been fi xed," he said.
League of Cities
Councilor Mike Fleck had
one word to sum up his expe-
rience at the National League
of Cities Conference held ear-
lier this month, "Wow." Fleck,
along with Mayor Jeff Gowing
and Councilor Jake Boone at-
tended the conference, reporting
back to the board on Monday.
"Housing has been a really
hot topic in our community. I
see it every day in our agency.
We’ll have money to assist in
housing and they are unable to
fi nd a place to stay. As much as
I’ve stayed away from the term
affordable housing, it seems like
that’s where we need to focus,"
Fleck said. He also noted that he
would like to see the city fund
traffi c signs with speed radars
affi xed to them. Fleck told the
board the signs ranged between
$2,500 and $3,000.
Bohemia lights
Councilman Ken Roberts
raised a question about the
lighting at 10th St. near Bohe-
mia Park after receiving an in-
quiry from a resident. Commu-
nity Development and Planning
Manager Faye Stewart told the
board that new holes were being
dug for light posts that would
light the area in the near future.
