SLRF works to prep for disaster Three dead in Douglas

South Lane Fire Chief John
Wooten was on the phone with
federal authorities for the better
part of his morning.
It was part of an effort to en-
roll the fi re district in two feder-
al programs meant to streamline
emergency services in the event
of a natural disaster or man-
made crisis that interfers with
communications.
The Government Emergency
Telecommunications Services
would allow the local fi re dis-
trict to utilize their cell phones
in the case of an emergency
without running into busy sig-
nals or dead lines.
"That cell phone becomes a
priority account in the event of
an emergency," Wooten said,
citing last year's ice storm that
rendered local communication
systems useless.
"We couldn't use it for per-
sonal calls but it insures that
our personnel can get calls and
we can get our resources into
place," Wooten said of the plan
that would cost callers 75 cents
per minute.
Similarly, the WTS program
would provide the same service
for landlines, allowing South
Lane County Fire and Rescue to
make calls in case of an emer-
gency.
"The eclipse this past sum-
mer is the perfect example,"
Wooten said. "The phone lines
were jammed and with this pro-
gram we would be able to make
calls."
Emergency personnel are giv-
en a code to use which enables
their phones to operate under
conditions like the ice storm
and eclipse as well as the com-
ing Cascadia Quake.

Kevin Wayne Adams
By Caitlyn May

On November 7
around 8 p.m., a fa-
ther found his foster
son waiting for him
outside their home. In-
side, his wife, daughter
and stepdaughter were
dead. Shot to death.
Kevin Wayne Ad-
ams, 16, of Roseburg
was arrested on three
counts of aggrevated
murder after his foster-
father, Robert Adams,
contacted authorities.
The victims were
identifi ed by court doc-
uments and later by
authories as 55-year-
old Donya Adams,
26-year-old
Amory
Adams and 10-year-
old Payshience "Tia"
Adams. The fi rst two
victims were identifi ed
as Robert Adams wife
and biological daugh-
ter. The third victim
was Kevin Adams' bi-
ological sister and fel-
low foster child in the
Adams' home.
Robert Adams told
authorities that he left
the house around 6:30
p.m. and when he ar-
rived home, Kevin was
waiting outside and
told him to call the po-
lice but asked his foster
father not to go inside
the house.
Robert said that upon
entering the house, he
found his wife, daugh-
ter and foster daughter
dead and a handgun
out of place and laying
on a bed in the home.
Authorities arrived
on scene at 8:43 p.m.
and the Douglas Coun-
ty Major Crimes Team
activated shortly after.
According to au-
thorities, Kevin Adams
said he shot his foster
mother and both his
sisters and then waited
for his foster father to
return home.
Kevin Adams was
booked into the Doug-
las County Juvenile
Detention Facility on
November 7.

•
Intercessor—He prays for us and through
us when we don’t know how to pray on our own.
•
Standby—He stands by us, ready to act
on our behalf when we need something.
•
Strengthener—He gives us God’s grace
to do whatever we need to do in every situation.
He’s all these things and so much more! God is
literally everything we need, and as we fellowship
with the Holy Spirit, we can have “the mind of
Christ [to be guided by His thoughts and purpos-
es]” (1 Corinthians 2:16 AMP).
Learn the Sound of His Voice
The Holy Spirit is the only One who fully
knows the mind of God, so when we pray for God
to give us wisdom or the knowledge we need, it’s
important for us to realize the Spirit is in us (1
Corinthians 2:12; 6:19). And He communicates
to us what He hears God say. John 16:13 (AMP)
explains that He is “the Spirit of Truth” and He
guides us into the Truth. “For He will not speak
on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever
He hears [from the Father….]”
One way we learn how to hear the Holy Spirit
is by understanding that He has emotions and He
can be grieved. Ephesians 4:30 (AMP) says, “Do
not grieve the Holy Spirit of God….” Because He
lives in us, when He feels grieved, we will feel
it too.
Ephesians 4:29-31 (AMP) lists some behaviors
that cause Him to be grieved: unwholesome (foul,
profane, worthless, vulgar) speech, bitterness,
wrath, anger, and clamor (perpetual animosity, re-
sentment, strife, faultfi nding), slander, every kind
of malice (all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malev-
olence).
When we choose to think and speak in ways
that go against His nature, we will feel conviction,
and the best thing we can do is confess our sin and
repent immediately.
James 3:8 teaches that no one can “tame the hu-
man tongue” and sometimes we make mistakes
and say wrong things. But we can learn from our
mistakes; we can pray and ask God to help us only
say things that are right and pleasing to Him.
I know it’s easy to be insensitive and say the
wrong things sometimes. The other day I was
wearing a blouse that didn’t fi t me right, and I said
to someone, “This thing is way too big for me but
it would probably fi t you.” Afterward, I couldn’t
believe I had said it!
As our Counselor, He wants to guide us in ev-
erything we do, and we can learn how to hear His
voice.
Listen for the still, small voice of the Holy Spir-
it speaking to your heart. You can hear it as you
wait quietly in His presence, while you’re study-
ing His Word, in the midst of your circumstances,
and even through nature. God is talking to you!
