6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL NOVEMBER 1, 2017 The support you need to find quality Teens charged in Creswell lumber mill fi re Armory hosts railroad show By Caitlyn May Last weekend the Armory transformed into a train station as it welcomed in the Willamette Cascade Model Railroad Club (WC- MRC). The club put on a free show from Friday to Sunday that had ten running trains at any given time in a variety of sizes. WCMRC President Lee Temple estimated that there were over 700 people in attendance throughout the course of the weekend and said that the show had something for everyone. “It’s about the kids’ excitement when they see Thomas if they are a little preschooler or somebody seeing a train that they rode or they remember a relative that worked for the railroad,” said Temple. One aspect that Temple was especially excited about what the families that come out to the events. Temple fi rst became interested in trains when his dad gave him a train when he was three years old. At 19 he got into model trains and 50 years later, he is passionate about the future of the hobby. “We’ve seen lots of kids excited that are into trains. And we’re trying to plant those seeds with young people because they are the future of the hobby,” said Temple. Getting the show at the Armory was two years in the making. Temple fi rst had talks of this at a Drain show that the organization put on that Cottage Grove Are Chamber of Commerce director Tra- vis Palmer was attending. The two talked and thought it would be good fi t for the community. cmay@cgsentinel.com Three teenagers are in custody after engaging in a mini crime spree that included allegedly starting at least three fi res and several minor thefts in the Creswell area. Sergeant Carrie Carver of the Lane County Sheriff's Offi ce re- ported that three male juveniles--two 13-year-olds and one 16-year- old--were in custody and facing charges of arson in the fi rst degree, arson in the second degree, criminal mischief in the fi rst degree, reckless burning and burglary in the fi rst and second degree. A fi re broke out at a lumber mill owned by Fore Lumber LLC on Butte Rd. on October 22. The fi re caused thousands in damages and a nearby residence was evacuated while crews battled the blaze. A smaller fi re was apparently set at the same mill on October 8 which is also being attributed to the teens. Prior to the October 8 mill fi re, the teens allegedly started a suspicious fi re at Holt Park on October 20 and an additional fi re at Creswell Middle School on October 20. The 16-year-old is also being investigated in connection to a va- cant house fi re started on September 28. According to the sheriff's offi ce, all three juveniles had cooperat- ed with the investigation and are currently being housed at the Lane County Juvenile Justice Center. Due to their ages, the names of the teenagers are not currently being released.
