6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL OCTOBER 25, 2017
D
ivine timing creates magic and
miracles. They happen when you
least suspect them and leave your
mouth hanging open in awe, and your mind
exclaiming, "How on earth did that just hap-
pen!"
I stopped at my walking buddy Jim's,
for a walk on West Vancouver's seawall;
crowded with tourists, residents and dogs.
Instead of leaving right away we chat-
ted for 45 minutes, until I felt a tug at my
heart to go for the walk. We left, then he
returned to get his hat, and I popped back
home for my sunglasses. As I was leaving I
picked up the newspaper, with artist Lynda
and Silky's pet article, that had forgotten on
our last four walks.
This delay in timing led Jim and me
straight to a jaw dropping moment! As we
crossed the train tracks, representing the
past and future crossroads of lives, we were
disappointed to see that the artists were not
at the park.
Just then a woman, Phillipa, and her dog,
Precious, walked passed us. The cute, con-
fi dent, fi ve pound, eight-year-old, dog com-
manded attention! I mentioned how ador-
able the dog was and Phillipa exploded with
pride, "I picked her up at the shelter three
months ago. She is the best dog I ever had!
I wanted a senior dog and she is trained,
lovable, fun and has turned my house into
a home."
Remembering that I was carrying the
"not delivered" newspaper, I opened it to
the pet column, and asked her if she wanted
Precious featured.
Phillipa, in Canada, pointed to the Ore-
gon newspaper article's photograph of Lyn-
da and Silky and exclaimed,
"They are my neighbors! Pre-
cious and I drove over to visit
them and the other artists, but
they've been relocated to the
next street today!"
On the way, Phillipa shared
her story, "My son's recent pass-
ing left a big hole in my heart. I
needed to fi ll it with love. So I
purr-used Internet rescue sights,
visited a few, then I checked a
different shelter's photos and
there was MY DOG! I called
hoping that the dog was still for
adoption, and left a message. I
could not wait, so I drove the
distance to the shelter only to
learn the dog was in a foster
home. That evening I received a
call to ‘visit' Precious.
Apparently the wee dog was
transferred from a shelter 1,000
miles away, where she had been
placed, bailed out, escaped,
caught, and tossed back into
doggy prison - terrorized.
And the rest is history. I took
one look at Precious and came
home with her. I felt she was
searching for me."
Phillipa's neighbor's cat's
name is Precious. She thought it
was a ridiculous name. But not
for her dog, who is "Precious"
inside and out!
The tiny canine was deemed
as part Chinese Crested because
she had areas without fur. But
after a few weeks, of healthy
people meats and vegies, the
dog transformed into a cute fur-
ry creature!
Phillipa's neighbors love
dogs, so when a new adoption
arrives, the neighbors bring
over their dog's castoff toys and
supplies. Precious's favorite toy
is an ugly, indescribable, orange
and brown animal. With a big
smile on her face, she wildly
squeaks it, then takes off run-
ning as if she's stolen the crown
jewels.
"Precious is great company
and an amazing cuddler," said
Phillipa. "Just what I needed.
She loves sleeping under my
blankets, and laying her head
next to mine. Her cuteness
makes my heart sing. She's
brought fun, joy, and laughter
back into my life. She loves
toys, grabs one, and then runs,
wanting me to chase her for it.
It is great exercise for us both!
I am so blessed to have her. It
is a miracle, destiny, that a little
bit of a dog made it 1,000 miles
for me to rescue her and her to
sooth and heal my heart."
TIPS
"I wanted to adopt an older
dog because they are harder to
place than puppies," said Philli-
pa. "Senior pets have so much
love to give, Precious proves
that, and she came trained! It is
a win, win, win situation!"
