Cottage Grove cross-
country ready for
tomorrow's district
meet

In a fi nal preparation for the
district meet that takes place
tomorrow at Lane Communi-
ty College, the Cottage Grove
boys and girls team competed
last week in the Country Fair
Classic.
The meet that has always
weaved through the historic fair-
grounds in Veneta was moved to
Richardson Park at Fern Ridge
this year after the Country Fair
was presented with a letter to
cease and desist all events at the
site so they can widen the roads
and if they did not comply, the
entire summertime event would
be in jeopardy.
The historically fl at and fast
course at the fairgrounds – that
was sometimes found to be
shorter than 5000 meters – was
traded for the course at Richard-
son Park.
“The course was a lot harder
than I thought it was going to be.
I thought it was going to be real-
ly fl at,” said Cottage Grove run-
ner Konrad Raum. “The course
is really uneven at the grass lev-
els, lots of potholes. Then there
is this area over there for some
reason that felt really hard.”
Despite the challenge, Raum
fi nished 16th overall in a time of
17:15 and was the fi rst fi nisher
of the Cottage Grove boys.
“I’ve been getting pretty good
at pacing myself lately,” said
Raum “I was trying to go 5:20
miles. 5:22 is what I got for my
fi rst split. After that I slowed
down, it was 5:32 and then
5:45. I wasn’t feeling my best
this race.”
He was followed closely by
Jimmy Talley in 21st at 17:22.
Jesse Ellingworth was 36th,
Justin Francis 102nd and Eric
Cortes 107th to fi nish out the
Lions top fi ve. The team fi n-
ished ninth of the 27 teams that
competed.
On the girls side, the Li-
ons fi nished 20th of 23 teams
with Stella Sobotkova leading
the way in 83rd place. Nadia
Witt, Rhea Florez, Lizbeth Za-
rate-Hernandez and Kenzie
Parsons were the other scoring
runners for Cottage Grove.
“I think that [both teams are]
going in the right direction.
Their times won’t show it today
because four days ago they tore
it up in a really fast course,”
said head coach Jim Settelmey-
er. “I expected this to be another
fast course but it was really a bit
of punishing course. I’m a little
worried about that because the
little side hill running you have
to do. But we’ve got a full week.
We’ll recover, we’ll be ready.”
At districts, the boys team is
projected to get second place –
which would qualify them for
the state meet – and the girls are
projected at fourth.
