South Lane Mental
Health offers LBGTQ
youth support group

Members of Cottage Grove Elite Fitness held a fundraiser last Saturday for people affected by the Oregon wildfi res this summer.
Some people made donations before the group workout, while others brought in donations from their co-workers, employers,
friends and family. At the time that fi re season was at its peak, a couple of hurricanes hit the Southeastern U.S., and most news media
focused on the hurricane damage. With very little press coverage of the fi res, the gym trainers wanted to do something to help their
fellow Oregonians. As the plan came together, it was decided to support the crews fi ghting the fi res, too. The workout of the day
was created to honor a crew of fi refi ghters who tragically lost their lives while fi ghting a fi re in 2013. As incentive the gym awarded
a month of unlimited classes to the person who brought in the most donations. Half of the funds will be sent to the Red Cross for
Oregon Wildfi re Victims, and half is going to the Wildland Firefi ghter Foundation.

Day--October 11--can be both
a freeing day or a reminder that
being different is not always
easy. South Lane Mental Health
has taken a step to ensure teen-
agers in Cottage Grove have a
safe space to explore and dis-
cuss those differences as well as
provide an open forum to make
new friends.
The group meets every Friday
from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at South
Lane Mental Health's east build-
ing adjacent to its main campus.
Individuals between the ages of
14 and 18 are welcome to attend
this free group.
13-year-olds will have to wait
a year to join the group. As for
why 19-year-olds are exclud-
ed from joining, Williams said,
"It's important to have those
shared experiences and to be in
a similar time in their lives."
Williams said that the idea for
the group struck her when she
realized there wasn't a space for
LBGTQ youth to socialize like
in other areas, including Eu-
gene.
"This group is informal, a
social experience to make con-
nections with people who share
their identifi cation and get sup-
port and have fun."
So far, participation has been
limited since the group began
this summer, something Wil-
liams contributes to school be-
ing out and word of mouth be-
ing non-existant. Transportation
is also a hurdle with Williams
noting she is exploring options
to reach teens in Dorena and
outlying areas who may want to
participate.
Members of the group spend
the two hours every week
talking and doing icebreaker
type activities.
"It can be isolating identify-
ing as a LBGTQ and hard to
make friends and connections.
Mostly, this group is there to
make friends," Williams said.
The Friday group is a confi -
dential space with no signage
to signal the room is being used
for an LBGTQ group.
"We also have snacks," Wil-
liams said.
