don’t know what to do in a situ-
ation, just do what you do know
to do and keep moving forward.
We must learn to keep going
when diffi cult times come. One
way to do that is to get your
mind off yourself and your con-
cerns and help someone else.
The truth is we are happier and
more content when we’re help-
ing others than when we’re fo-
cusing on ourselves.
We all have problems, but our
problems don’t have to have us!
Our victory will come as we
remain determined to just keep
moving, doing what God puts in
our heart to do.
Rest. One major part of run-
ning your race is learning to
E
veryone has a race to
run. That just means
we all have a life to
live. The apostle Paul says in
Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore we
also, since we are surrounded
by so great a cloud of witness-
es, let us lay aside every weight,
and the sin which so easily en-
snares us, and let us run with
endurance the race that is set
before us” (NKJV).
Part of what that means to
me is to keep going, even in the
midst of the diffi culties in life.
Now, much of life is just ordi-
nary, everyday living. Yet a lot
of what happens comes in the
form of diffi cult situations, from
little annoyances to serious bur-
dens.
Hard times happen to us all.
But it’s how we handle them
that matters most. And 2 Timo-
thy 4:7 says, “I have fought the
rest. Now, that may sound like
an oxymoron, but here’s what
I mean. Resting isn’t about do-
ing nothing. It’s about being in
a place of peace and complete
trust in God. From a position
of rest, we can do whatever we
need to do because our faith is
not in ourselves but in the One
who gives us the strength and
ability to do it.

William R. (Bill) Salleng
December 16, 1923 to
September 27, 2017
Born in Omaha, Nebraska to Roy and
Grace Salleng, Bill is survived by his
beloved wife of 49 years, Laverne Salleng,
daughters, Marilyn Franc and Jennifer
Salleng, sons, Larry White (Sheila)
and Kevin White, and daughter-in-law,
Donna White, 5 grandchildren, 6 great-
grandchildren. Bill grew up a farm boy near Rosebud South
Dakota till age 13 then moved to Woodland, California.
At 17 he volunteered for the Marine Corp and served as
a Raider in WWII South Pacifi c as a Master Sergeant and
Platoon Leader. He re-enlisted and served during the Korean
Confl ict. He was a lifelong Mason. Bill came to Oregon in
1946 to log in Powers. He spent his life in Oregon and Alaska
logging and road building and was still splitting fi rewood at
age 89. He could build anything from a multi-fl oored shop
to wooden wine glasses on a lathe. He had a photographic
memory for people and places during his 93 years and was
an excellent storyteller. He had great strength, drive and
determination. All work and no play, if he didn’t like you,
he told you so. If he didn’t think you were doing something
right, he’d show you how to do it “right”. He will be dearly
missed.
We wish to thank the Signature Hospice staff , Colleen, Scott,
Nicole, Heather, John and Kathleen. Also Shirley’s nighttime
angels, Jeanette, Denise and Diane. And a special thank you
to Dr. John Haines and his wife.
Visitation will be held on October 10, 2017 from 5:00 -
7:00p.m. at Smith Lund Mills Funeral Chapel, 123 S. 7th St.,
Cottage Grove, OR 97424
Funeral Services and Reception will be held on October 11,
2017, at 10a.m. at Masonic Lodge #51 33322 Row River Rd,
Cottage Grove, OR 97424. Interment will be at the Roseburg
National Cemetery Annex in Roseburg. Arrangements by

Patty Jo Lang
Jimmie Lee Lawson, 74, of
Cottage Grove passed away
Sept. 25, 2017 in Eugene, Ore.
He was born Oct. 1, 1942 in
Chicago, Ill. to Anna Mae Law-
son.
Jimmie graduated from East
Aurora High School in 1959.
He proudly served his country
during the Vietnam War where
he was a SP4 Specialist and
mechanic. Jimmie was very
passionate about his military
service, patriotism and fellow
veterans.
He married his life partner of
32 years, Patricia Manning, on
Dec. 19, 2015 in Cottage Grove.
He worked for Transparts in
Portland, Ore. as a mechanic,
retiring in 2008.
Jimmie was an avid car en-
thusiast of classic cars and re-
furbished old gas pumps with
his creativity and artistry and
would take yearly road trips on
Route 66.
Survivors include his wife,
three sons, Michael Manning of
Vancouver, Wash., Parrish Law-
son of Wyoming and Sean Law-
son of Delaware, one daughter,
Chenita Lawson of Aurora, Ill.,
and many grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Jimmie was preceded in death
by his mother, Anna Mae Law-
son.
A celebration of life will be
held Saturday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m.
at Smith-Lund-Mills Funer-
al Chapel. Interment will be at
Roseburg National Cemetery
at a later date. Arrangements in
the care of Smith-Lund-Mills
Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove.

Patty Jo Lang, 82 of Dorena,
Oregon passed away September
5, 2017. She was born August 1,
1935, in Webbers Falls, OK to John
and Mary (McCorkle) Herron.
Patty graduated from High School
in Holtville, CA and attended
Pasadena City College. She was a
teacher’s assistant at Saint Elizabeth
School in Pasadena, CA. Patty enjoyed art, was a nature
lover, birdwatching, cared for wild critters, photography,
painter of water colors and oil and enjoyed visiting with
family and friends. She married Elmer Author Lang on
Sept. 29, 1956, in Fullerton, CA. Patty is survived by son
Jeff (Patty) Lang, son Mike Lang, daughter Teresa Lang and
Joe Wright, sister Charlotte Pouzar and grandchild Sarah
Lang-Wright. She was preceded in death by her husband
Elmer Lang and brothers; Lou and David Herron. A
memorial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday October 13,
2017, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 S. 7th St., Cottage
Grove, OR. Arrangements by Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral
