PeaceHealth earns national
award
PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at
RiverBend recently received national designation
as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCB-
SA) Blue Distinction® Specialty Care provider.
The designation is designed to help prospective
parents fi nd hospitals that deliver quality, afford-
able maternity care.
Nearly four million babies are born in the U.S.
annually, making childbirth the most common
reason for hospitalization. The Blue Distinction
Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates
hospitals on several quality measures, including
the percentage of newborns that fall into the cat-
egory of early elective delivery, an ongoing con-
cern in the medical community. Compared with
babies born at 39 weeks or later, early term infants
face higher risks of infant death and respiratory
ailments such as respiratory distress syndrome,
pneumonia, and respiratory failure, among other
conditions. These babies also have a higher rate of
admission to Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
In addition, hospitals that receive a Blue
Distinction Center for Maternity Care designa-
tion agreed to meet requirements that align with
principles that support evidence-based practices
of care, as well as having initiated programs to
promote successful breastfeeding, as described
in the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative by Ba-
by-Friendly USA or the Mother-Friendly Hospital
program by the Coalition for Improving Mater-
nity Services (CIMS) through its “Ten Steps of
Mother-Friendly Care.”
The program also evaluates hospitals on over-
all patient satisfaction, including a willingness to
recommend the hospital to others.

bring your dreams!
On October 28th from 9a.m.
to 12p.m. the Coast Fork Willa-
mette Watershed Council (CF-
WWC) will host an ivy-pulling
work party at Riverside Park
in Cottage Grove. If left un-
checked, English ivy can climb
and kill trees. Trees along river
and streambanks are essential
to water quality and a healthy
riparian area, and protecting
established trees in this park is
a high priority. The CFWWC
needs your help in removing
this invasive species from lo-
cal streams and rivers! Please
RSVP to maggie@coastfork.org
or call the CFWWC offi ce (541)
767-9717.
The CFWWC will provide
tools, water, snacks and gloves.
Bring your refi llable water bottle
and dress for the weather. This
event is rain or shine. Riverside
Park is located at the intersec-
tion of Main St. & South Riv-
er Rd. in Cottage Grove. Street
parking is available on South
River Road. If you are unable
to attend but want to show your
support, please consider making
a donation to the Coast Fork
Willamette Watershed Council.
