AIR QUALITY AFFECTS SCHOOL SPORTS, RECESS
W
ith several wildfi res burning throughout the state of Oregon
over the summer, air quality has been affected. Lane Re-
gional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) routinely issued warnings
of “unhealthy” and “hazardous” air quality in Cottage Grove as
students geared up to go back to school. As a result, recess at the
elementary level and school sports across the board were affected.
The fi rst day of school saw the South Lane School District issue a
directive to hold recess indoors due to unhealthy air quality read-
ings issued by LRAPA.
The district released a statement, saying, Wildfi re smoke is af-
fecting air quality in the Lane County area. In South Lane School
District we take our students' health and safety very seriously.
We are closely monitoring air quality conditions to guide our
decision making around outdoor student activities.” It went on to
say, “When air quality conditions are unhealthy, schools will hold
indoor recess and reduce students' level of physical activity in PE
and in classrooms. Sports practices will be moved inside or can-
celed and games will be rescheduled when conditions warrant. We
are working to keep as much smoke as possible out of our school
buildings, and will be keeping windows and doors closed to sup-
port these efforts. We encourage all families to send your students

In the spring of 2016 the President signed the Every Student
Succeeds Act (ESSA). This law requires schools to provide stu-
dent contact information to military or university recruiters upon
request. If you DO NOT want your contact information released,
pick up a form in the main offi ce that will need to be signed by
you and your parents. Signed forms need to be returned to Mrs.
Thoms by Friday, September 29.

The statement concluded by noting, “The Oregon Health Authority advises that parents of sensitive children (e.g. asthma, respiratory in-
fection, lung or heart disease) should follow their health care providers' advice about prevention and treatment of symptoms, and watch
the smoke forecast to decide when to limit their child's activities. Parents' individual decisions about school attendance based on health
concerns will be honored.”
Several sports games also felt the impact of smoke in the valley. OSAA released new standards that saw several games canceled includ-
ing boys’ soccer and cross country at Cottage Grove High School and football at Elkton.
