Community Sharing--nonprofi t that distributes food to low-income individu-

earlier this month that its shelves were sparse and the usual slow

time of the year had hit hard.
"We're doing better but we're not out of the woods," executive director Mike Fleck said.
He noted that the organization had received $5,000 in donations since the initial call for help in the
form of two checks--one for $3,000 and one for $2,000.
The organization receives food from Food for Lane County, a food pantry that serves more than
100 programs around Lane County, as well as statewide programs and donations from the community.
Fleck noted that, to his knowledge, outside sources were maintaining their level of giving. As for the
reasoning behind the shortage, he said he believed it was a multitude of factors.
Residents unable to utilize Community Sharing or who have been receiving food from the local
Gleaner organization still under suspension from Food for Lane County, can consult other local food
assistance programs or free meals around the community. They can also consult the Community Cal-
ender printed in every Sentinel that keeps a running list of community meals. The list provided at the
right is in no way meant to serve as a complete and full list of available resources and qualifi cations are
unique to each program.

Distracted driver law Oct. 1
Drivers who use their phones while driving risk getting into a lot
more (expensive) trouble come October 1.
Oregon's new distracted driving law goes into effect on Sunday,
October 1 after House Bill 2597 passed the state legislature and was
signed by the Governor Kate Brown.
The law addresses a loophole in the original 2009 legislation that mandates drivers use hands-free
devices when using their phones. The law specifi cally named only texting and calling, essentially
leaving drivers free to scroll through social media or play games while driving. House Bill 2597 closes
that loophole and imposes more serious fi nes and penalties for anyone caught without their hands on
the wheel.
The initial fi ne for drivers caught using the phones behind the wheel will raise from $160 to $260. A
second violation or a violation that leads to a crash will cost the driver $435. A third offense within 10
years will carry up to six months in jail and a fi ne of up to $2,500.
