Have a friend give you each
type of word to fill in the blanks.
Then read the story aloud!
t is recess time. You and another
kid want to play with the
same ball. You feel angry. This
is called conflict. A conflict is
a disagreement between people.
Find at
least 10
differences

pictures.
My friend Lawrence had the
hiccups while getting a haircut.

While many conflicts start with bad
feelings, they don’t have to end that way. Sometimes people
act in an unfair or “foul” way when they are in a conflict.
Fouls make people feel more and more angry. People can
also act in a fair way that settles a conflict and makes everyone
involved feel good. This is called resolution to the conflict.

Select a headline in today’s
newspaper. Rewrite it to
say just the opposite of
what is says now.
Read the above lists of fair and foul ways to handle a
conflict. Then look at how the children in these cartoons
handle the conflict over the ball. Decide if the children
are being fair or foul.
“It’s okay,” he said. “I can’t
stay mad when I think about

we saw today!”
Standards Link: Grammar: Understand and
use nouns, adjectives and verbs correctly.
Complete the grid by using all the
letters in the word IGNORE in each
vertical and horizontal row. Each letter
should only be used once in each row.
Some spaces have been filled in for you.
Pretend not to hear. Instead listen to
your own thoughts and tell yourself,
“That’s their problem, not mine.” and
“I’m OK just the way I am.”
Find a safe person to talk to. Make a
list of people you could talk to about
being bullied or about times you have
seen others being bullied.
Be a buddy. Kids who are alone are
more likely to be bullied. Make a plan
to walk with a friend wherever you
think you might meet a bully.
Don’t bully back. Getting angry and
fighting back sometimes is just what
the bully wants. It’s dangerous too,
because someone could get hurt.

Find an example of a conflict in the newspaper.
Are the people in the conflict saying and doing
things that are FAIR or FOUL? Try to understand
how people on both sides of the conflict feel.
Think of fair ways they could act. Write a letter
to the editor sharing your thoughts on the matter.

This week’s word:
CONFLICT
A conflict is a strong
disagreement, argument
or a difference of opinion.
The conflict started when
both Tom and Terry
wanted the class ball.
Try to use the word
conflict in a sentence today
when talking with your
friends and family.
