ing test and the examiners' test. The latter is
required before an instructor can teach life
saving.
Order has been easier to maintain since
the older and younger children have been
separated, according to the instructor. The
older children were too rough in play for the
smaller ones.
Forenoon hours are devoted to horse-
shoes, baseball, basketry and games. For
the small children in the afternoon there
are basketry, story hour at 2:30 and games.
Miss Horton plans to start volley ball as
soon as balls can be secured. Team compe-
tition is more popular with the children than
individual effort.

Competition Is Keen In Playground
Games: Swimming Is to Start Soon With
Instructions for Life Saving.
The average daily attendance during the
fi rst week of the city playground was 50, the
second week 45, the third week 45 and the
average thus far this week is over 50, ac-
cording to a report of Miss Margery Horton,
instructor. Interest in activities and sports
offered is keen and new children come each
day. A course in basketry started this week
is proving popular. A small class of the older
girls meets in the forenoon and a large class
of the smaller children in the afternoon.
Saturday Miss Horton expects to have
an exhibition of tops made by the children
and judges will choose the best. Some of
the children make tops out of spools, others
carve them out of blocks.
The swimming tank for the playground
will soon be completed and a schedule of
hours will be announced later. The chil-
dren will be divided according to age and
swimming ability. Miss Horton plans to
give a life saving course, provided there are
enough advanced swimmers. Miss Horton
has passed the American Red Cross life sav-

Hatfi eld Dedicates Motel, Relates It to
Economy
Gov. and Mrs. Mark O. Hatfi eld were
guests of honor at the formal dedication of
the Village Green motor hotel here Saturday
morning and participated in several events
connected with the dedication ceremonies.
Starting with a breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Gov.
Hatfi eld gave a short dedication talk in front
of the main entrance of the motel, beginning
POLICE BLOTTER
at 10:30 a.m. in which he called attention
to the important part such institutions might
play in the economy of Oregon.
Among other things he said a communi-
ty's reputation for hospitality might directly
affect the economy of the state by helping to
attract industry to certain sections and that
the Village Green motel should be among
the forefront of favorable factors in this
respect. The wide use of wood used in the
construction of the buildings should be very
helpful in promoting the No. 1 industry of
the state, lumber, he said.
Gov. Hatfi eld praised the Woodard fami-
ly for the loyalty shown the Cottage Grove
community, saying that four generations of
the family had a part in the building of one
of the fi nest motels on the coast.
Also signifi cant is the fact that the Wood-
ard family is still interested in the develop-
ment of wood and its products. Gov. Hat-
fi eld sawed a log in two which was placed in
the front driveway of the motel, rather than
cutting a ribbon.
As a fi nal part in the dedication ceremo-
nies, Gov. Hatfi eld carried Mrs. Hatfi eld
across the threshold of the Governor's suite,
which was especially reserved for the cou-
ple Friday night.

News from around the state and
the nation
Around the state:
Law enforcement around the state of Oregon is prepar-
ing for the state’s largest tourism draw in decades: the solar
eclipse. The phenomenon is expected to bring hundreds of
thousands to Oregon for a chance to watch the moon pass in
front of the sun but it is also set to cause a traffi c nightmare
and perhaps, see tourists descend on the state’s public park
campsites, leaving behind waste and possibly adding to the
wildfi re danger.
Say goodbye to the famous green carpet. Portland Interna-
tional Airport. The facility is planning a $1.3 billion upgrade
that would prevent arriving and departing passengers from
mixing and add extra security measures. The upgrade, and
its budget, has to be approved by the airlines that utilize the
facility but if the vote swings in favor of the upgrades, con-
struction would begin in 2020.
Oregon Statute 181.850 may be no more. The statute,
which prohibits Oregon law enforcement from interacting
with people based strictly on their immigration status is the
subject of a repeal effort by three state republicans. Mike
Nearman, Sal Esquivel and Greg Barreto have supported an
initiative petition to rid the state of the law. The petition will
have to earn nearly 90,000 signatures to be placed on the
ballot.
