8A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JULY 12, 2017
Q&A with Opal's "Talking With" director
Eliza Roaring Springs is directing the latest show at Cottage
Grove's Opal Theatre. A Eugene resident, she says Opal jumped
at the chance to add "Talking With," a play full of monologues
from 10 women of different backgrounds, with different expe-
riences as a way to court a broader audience. Here, she answers
questions about the show, its production and why it's worthy of
a ticket. Performances continue Friday (7:30 p.m.), Saturday
(7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.). For more information or to
purchase a ticket, please contact the Opal Theatre at 541-623-
0513.
Q: Walk us through this play and its plot.
A: It's 10 monologues of women in different
experiences of life. Whether one is in a religious
atmosphere and a snake hander or an older wom-
an in her fi nal stage of life. There's a range of what
women go through and the age
range is 25 to 75 years old.
Q: What are the origins of this
play?
A: It's a script by Jane Martin.
She created these women but
you can tell through the knowl-
edge in some of their stories that
she did a lot of research and in-
terviews. And each monologue
is eight to nine minutes long.
Q: How did you get involved in directing this
play?
A: I had gone to a few shows at the Opal Center.
I went to "God of Carnage." I know some people
at Opal because I have been directing at Cottage
Theatre and I know Opal was trying to expand
their audience and draw in more people. I sub-
mitted this play because it's perfect for that stage
and they leapt at the chance to do it. It's nice to
introduce this space to Eugene. At our last perfor-
mance there were a few Eugene directors eying
the space.
Q: What's your favorite monologue in the
show?
A: I can't answer that. That's like choosing be-
tween my children. I love them all. I'd love to
have done them all because I'm an actress at heart
but I'm too old and so I could only do a few of the
older parts. Everyone has a different favorite and
we had 24 women audition. That's unheard of in
this area but it's a rare gift to get such a juicy role.
And doing the work is as important. The process
being positive is just as important as the show to
me and so getting to work with these performers
one-on-one with just me and that person has been
wonderful.
Q: Why should Grovers come see "Talking
With"?
A: I think they'll be moved and entertained. I
think it's mind-broadening and makes people
think and feel connected. That's why we go to the
theater.
