Residents of a pop-up camp
near Jefferson Ave. in Cottage
Grove will have to fi nd a new
place to call home after the city
answered neighbors' concerns
over the encampment by post-
ing notice at the property.
According to city planner
Amanda Ferguson, the city of
Cottage Grove has posted notice
on the property giving the in-
habitants until July 17 to vacate.
Should the group not comply by
the date listed, the city would
then post a second notice.
"Our city code says the fi rst
notice is 10 business days," Fer-
guson said. "We get to choose
with the second notice. It would
probably be between fi ve and 10
days," she said.
If the campers do not com-
ply with the second notice they
could be fi ned up to $500.
"It's a large fi ne," Ferguson
said. "It goes through the mu-
nicipal court."
While the city has begun the
posting process at the property,
Ferguson said the matter can be
taken care of by the property
owner.
If the city receives contact
from the property owner of tres-
pass, then the Cottage Grove
Police Department can evict the
individuals from the property.
Neighbors of the property
noted the camp had grown from
one individual to approximately
three individuals over the course
of a few weeks. They noted that
the individuals were reportedly
using the restroom outside and
had assembled a series of tents
