Rodeo ropes in a big crowd

While it may be the middle of
summer, basketball never stops
for the Cottage Grove High
School girls team.
Two weekends ago the team
of 10 girls and three coaches
made the trip to Brookings Har-
bor for a team camp with nine
other teams from around the
state and four from California.
They stayed in an old school that
was converted to sleeping quar-
ters and featured a game room
in addition to a basketball court.
The focus of the camp was to
get some games under their belt
to help foster team growth.
“We had a lot of fun and it
was a great step forward in our
development,” said head coach
Kevin Yoss in an email.
The Lions played in seven
games over the weekend that
used a 20 minute running clock
instead of the normal eight min-
ute quarters used at the high
school level.
The girls fi nished with a 6-1
recovd and the games were all
fairly close with the outliers be-
ing a 68-15 win over Creswell
and a 62-28 loss to Hidden
Valley. In their one loss of the
weekend the Lions were without
starting point guard Tara Child.
Starting post Reilly Kelty was
hurt in the opening minutes of
the game but returned in the fi -
nal two games.
Keara Murphy led the team in
points averaging 11.5 per game
and was second on the team in
rebounds with 5.1 behind Kel-
ty’s 6 boards per game.

Kamon Massie hangs on during the Saddle Bronc Riding competition on Friday night at the 69th Cottage Grove Rodeo.

Last weekend the Cottage Grove Riding Club
welcomed in over 3000 people during the two days
of the 69th Cottage Grove Rodeo.
The weekend of sun, which was the opposite of
last year’s rain-soaked rodeo, belonged to Colton
Campbell of Klamath Falls. Campbell took home
the prestigious All-Around title after securing fi rst
place victories in calf roping and team roping. On
the women’s side, Bailey Beall of Redmond took
home the All-Around title. While the pair did well,
the other group that performed well were the horses
and bulls of the bucking stock.
“The whole bucking stock was really good,” said
Scott Fergason the President of the Riding Club
who oversaw the rodeo. “No riders rode either
night so our bucking stock is really good.”
Aside from the competition at hand, there was
also an array of activities to entertain the audience.
It started with having rodeo “funny man” Kyle
Bode on sight who worked to entertain the crowd
between events. This was the fi rst time in over ten
years that this rodeo has seen a funny man and his
commentary was well received by those in atten-
dance. The highlight of his performance came on
Friday night when he participated in a skit with
Cottage Grove Police Offi ce Chris Joyce and Police
Service Dog Torq.
There was also the dance on Friday and Saturday
night following the rodeo which featured live music
from the Eugene band Outlaw ‘Shine and the buck-
aroo breakfast on Saturday morning.
The Riding Club has more events this summer
including the Al Barber Gaming Series throughout
the rest of the summer and the Northwest Youth Ro-
deo on August 4-6.
