Red Cross swimming and life-saving
classes will start Monday and will continue
for three weeks under the sponsorship of the
Cottage Grove Recreation Committee. Last
year there were over one hundred who took
advantage of the opportunity and a much
larger group is expected this year as prelim-
inary registration has exceeded last year’s
total.
The Red Cross will have three instructors
present to conduct the classes at the Cottage
Grove lake. The water at the lake was tested
for purity and is the only swimming spot in
south Lane to pass as safe for swimming.
Classes will be divided into beginners,
intermediates, swimmers, junior and senior
lifesavers. The Union high bus will leave
Jefferson school at 1:00 o’clock each day
providing transportation for those who wish
to go.
Bob Dusenberry, local director, has
stressed the fact that there have been seven-
teen deaths from drowning in the county al-
ready this year and that no one should pass
up this opportunity to learn to swim and to
learn life-saving techniques. Anyone who
has not been able to register in advance may
register on Monday.
A boom enclosed pool has again been ar-
ranged for the beginners and there will be
fi ve adults present either for instruction or
supervision so that there should be a maxi-
mum of protection against water accidents.
Gibbs Ave. Church Of Christ to Build
$32,000 Building
Permission has been granted the Gibbs Av-
enue Church of Christ by the Oregon Con-
struction Review Board to build $32,000
church building on the Gibbs Avenue prop-
erty, replacing the building destroyed by
fi re in May of this year. However, permis-
sion would not have been necessary after
July 1st, according to Amil Thies, trustee.
The building will be constructed of pumice
blocks and will have a full basement. A sec-
ond story will run part way of the length of
the building.
Building specifi cations are now in the
hands of the architect and will be released
shortly.

News from the state legislature
and around Oregon
• Oregon is
set to become
the fi rst state
that mandates a predictable work schedule. The
“Fair Work Week” bill earned legislative support
in Salem this week. It requires that employers give
employees a week’s notice of their work schedule
and at least 10 hours between shifts.
From the legislature
•
House Bill 2707 may fi zzle out as the legislature
sets to close out this session. The bill would set
aside $8.2 million to expand studies on the state’s
underground water supply.
•
Governor Kate Brown’s signature legislative ef-
fort, Cleaner Air Oregon, fell to industrial lobby-
ists last week after the legislature refused to fund
the initiative. House Bill 2269 would have levied
a one-time fee on the state’s 2,000-plus permitted
air polluters.
•
The legislature doesn’t want Oregonians so much
as touching their cell phones while driving. The
governing body passed House Bill 2597 which
prohibits drivers from talking, texting, going on
social media, watching movies or even touching
their cell phone. Emergency services, forestry and
other government agencies are exempt from the
law.
•
Senator Floyd Prozanski released the following
statement on the education package passed by the
legislature: Needless to say, I'm frustrated. Both
chambers have now passed a K-12 budget funding
schools at $8.2 billion. This is despite the $8.4
billion needed for districts to avoid additional cuts
to staff, including teachers and counselors, and to
school days. I reached out to each school district
in our district to fi nd out what the difference
would mean to them. Ultimately, to show solidar-
ity with my Senate colleagues who voted "yes"
on the K-12 funding bill (HB 5517A), I changed
my vote to "yes" and pledged to work with them
to raise additional revenue for K-12 and all other
levels of education.
