COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JULY 5, 2017 3B
Speedway Welcomes Wallbanger Cup and Shootout
The Wild West Modifi ed Shootout returned to
Cottage Grove Speedway on Monday, June 26th,
for another round of racing action. It would mark
the fourth round of the 2017 schedule and the sec-
ond straight night at CGS. Forty-one cars would
fi ll the pits from the states of Oregon, California,
Nevada, and Montana as well as the Canadian
province of British Columbia.
Medford’s Mark Wauge jumped out the early
race lead. Wauge set a wicked fast pace with the
only thing slowing him down being a few cau-
tions. Shortly after a lap sixteen restart he would
feel a lot of pressure from John Campos.
Campos, out of Keizer, would complete the
pass on lap nineteen to obtain the coveted posi-
tion. A fi nal lap twenty-nine caution, for debris,
would bunch the fi eld up one last time. On the
ensuing restart John would keep his mount in
front of the rest of the fi eld and became the fourth
different winner in as many night with the tour.
It marked the fi rst career win for Campos and is
the eighteenth different winner with the WWMT.
Eugene’s Jesse Williamson would rally to a
second-place fi nish over third fi nishing Curtis
Towns, out of Cottage Grove. Mark Wauge end-
ed his evening fourth while Jake Mayden for the
second straight night came out of the consolation
feature to get fi fth. Unfortunately, during postrace
tech Curtis Towns was disqualifi ed giving third to
Wauge, fourth to Mayden, and Albany ace Bricen
James inherited fi fth. Consolation feature win-
ners were Mayden and James.
In the fi rst heat races they would be won by
Ethan Dotson, Jesse Williamson, Curtis Towns,
Collen Winebarger, and Danny Lauer. Second
round heat winners were Dotson, D.J. Shannon,
Towns, Jeremy Shank, and Jeff Lovell.
Saturday was a hot one at Cottage Grove
Speedway but that wasn’t gonna slow down the
action especially for the Street Stock class com-
peting for an ultra-hot $2026.00 to win for the
Wallbanger Cup!! 41 Street Stocks signed in to
race on Saturday along with Todd’s Auto Body
Sprints, Late Models, and the fi rst of 3 nights for
the open comp hornets!
Qualifying started the night off and quick
times went to Chance Hyser in the hornets with
a 17.552, Jack Parshall with a 16.178 in the street
stock class, Tomas Hunziker was quick time in
the late model with a 14.257, and Tyler Thomp-
son had the fastest lap of the night in the Todd’s
Auto Body Sprints with a 12.870.
James Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Races
brought some great racing in every class. Chance
Hyser and Tiffany Towns picked up wins in the
fun and exciting Open Comp Hornets. Late Mod-
el wins went to Curtis Towns and Blaine Taylor.
There was just one James Heating and Air Con-
ditioning Heat Race for the Todd’s Auto Body
Sprints and Shane Forte picked up the win. 4 full
races were ran for the Street Stocks and with a 6
car invert and only the top 3 getting locked into
the A Main these were some exciting races.
After the checkers were done fl ying the cars
moving directly to the A Main were decided and
after a fun frozen contest Jody Tanner would start
on the pole and defending Wallbanger Champion,
Kyle Yeack would start 12th.
Dot’s Trophy Shop Dashes were up next and
taking home the hardware in the Hornets was
Chance yser, Late Model winner Rob Campos,
Shane Forte was victorious in the Todd’s Auto
Body Sprints, and the Wallbanger trophy went
home with Brian Cronk.
2 B Mains were ran for the Street Stocks with
only the top 4 transferring to the big show! An-
drew Langan was fi rst in the fi rst B with Cody
Smith, Marc Farrar, and Dakotah Goddard all
also transferring. Brian Cronk won the next B
Main followed by David Cronk, Evan Britton,
and Ray Bloom moving on.
A Main Events were up next and the invert for
all classes other than the Street Stocks would line
straight up from their heat races! Chance Hyser
led every lap of the Open Comp Hornet main
event and picked up a clean sweep followed by
Marcel Forte, KC Scott, Aaron Bloom, and Eric
Ashley. Next up was the Late Model class.
Blaine Taylor led every lap but not without a
fi ght from Darren Coffell and David Schmidt in
a 3 wide race for the win. Taylor was the win-
ner closely followed by Coffell, Schmidt, Chuck
Christian, and Tomas Hunziker. Todd’s Auto
Body Sprints rolled onto the dirt and went for
25 caution free laps with Shane Forte once again
leading all 25. Forte picked up the win over Pat-
rick Dills, Tyler Thompson, Raquel Ivie, and
Ricky Ashley. 20 of the fastest Street Stocks in
the Northwest pulled onto the track and offered
the fans their 4 wide salute before lining up and
taking the initial green fl ag! Chris Sine got the
lead on the start and led for 2 laps before David
Schmidt took over on lap 3 and got a good lead
on the fi eld, meanwhile Kyle Yeack was quickly
working his way to the front from 12th.
A caution on lap 12 would close the gap and
put Yeack right on Schmidt’s bumber. Schmidt
was able to hold onto the lead until lap 21 when
Yeack and Kevin Roberts would be able to make
their moves.
The laps wound down and at the fi nish Kyle
Yeack would once again be your Wallbanger Cup
Champion, Kevin Roberts, Brian Cronk, David
Schmidt, and Andrew Langan were the top 5 fi n-
ishers.
Next up for Cottage Grove Speedway is Ladies
Night on July 1st! The fi rst 1000 ladies into the
grandstands will get in for Free and the Todd’s
Auto Body Sprints, Late Models, IMCA Sport-
mods, Street Stocks, and Quality RV Hornets will

ity RV Hornets adding to the action!
