COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JUNE 28, 2017
3B
A busy weekend at the speedway
BY BEN
DEATHERAGE
For The Sentinel
C
ottage Grove Speedway
would host the third race
of the 2017 Wild West Modi-
fi ed Shootout. Forty-fi ve drivers
would pull into the pit area for
the 5 p.m. start time race. En-
tries would come from all over
Oregon, California, Nevada,
Montana and Colorado as well
as the Canadian province of
British Columbia.
Collen Winebarger would
pace the fi eld early at the drop
of the green fl ag of the main
event. Near the
halfway mark
he would feel a
lot of pressure
from challeng-
ers only to keep
them in check. Several cautions
would occur which eliminated
the factor of lapped traffi c for
quite some time.
Winebarger, out of Corbett,
would however have a close call
with the less than two laps to go.
While navigating lapped traffi c
he would make contact with a
slower car and nearly lost the
lead before a caution came out
for separate incident. Not too
long afterwards he would get
passed via the inside by Ethan
Dotson.
Dotson, from Bakersfi eld,
California, made the maneuver
on lap 31 and took off after that.
The young Central Valley native
would build a sizeable interval
and won his fi rst career Wild
West Modifi ed Shootout feature
in only three starts. He would
become the seventeenth differ-
ent driver to have won with the
series while he is the fi fth Cali-
fornian to do so.
Collen Winebarger was a
respectable second followed
by Stayton’s Grey Ferrando
in third. Fourth and fi fth place
went to John Campos, from
Keizer, and Springfi eld chauf-
feur Jake Mayden. The two
consolation features were won
by Great Falls, Montana’s Joey
Price and Brad Martin of War-
ren.
Five groups of heat races
were ran twice earlier in the
program. Winners of the fi rst
fl ight of heats included Danny
Lauer, Matthew Drager, Grey
Ferrando, Ethan Dotson, and
Collen Winebarger. Heat win-
ners in the second set were Ran-
dy Brown, Bricen James, Dustin
Cady, Ethan Dotson, and Collen
Winebarger.
The Wild West Modifi ed
Shootout returns to Cottage
Grove Speedway on Monday,
June 26th with a 6:00 PM start
time. Tuesday, the 27th, is re-
served for an off day before
Wednesday, the 28th, sees the
series head to Sunset Speedway
Park in Banks. For more infor-
mation follow the Wild West
Modifi ed Shootout on Face-
book.
