Crockett, Mayden, and Scott Claim Sunday
May 28th Victories at Cottage Grove
By Ben Deatherage
For the Cottage Grove Sentinel
Cottage Grove, Oregon- Sun-
day, May 28th would be the
second and fi nal leg of the 2017
Marvin Smith Memorial Grove
Classic. There would be even
more cars in the pit area with
all three divisions being swol-
len with very good car counts.
The 360 Sprints division was
back for their second straight
evening while the Mohawk
Metals IMCA Modifi eds and
Quality RV Repair Hornets re-
turned to the ¼-mile clay oval.
Chris Schmelzle, of Colville,
Washington, took advantage of
his pole starting position to lead
the fi eld on the opening lap.
Lap two would witness Roger
Crockett make it past Schmel-
zle to seize fi rst place. Crockett,
of Medford and in the Roger
Henderson machine, would
then battle with Jason Solwold
for quite some time.
Solwold, from Burling-
ton, Washington in the Mike
Anderson and Monica Bata
owned mount, would obtain
the lead on lap four only to lose
the position to Crockett on lap
eleven. Solwold would mount
a late race surge grabbing the
lead yet again around lap 23
only for Crockett to make it
back around him with just mere
laps to go. Roger would hold
on to the victory to fi nally win
his fi rst Marvin Smith Memori-
al Grove Classic.
Jason Solwold would fi nish
a close second with Clarks-
burg, California’s Justyn Cox
recording a third place fi nish.
Eugene native Kyle Miller,
driving for Kady Adelman, was
fourth while Robbie Price, from
Cobble Hill, British Columbia,
wrapped up the top fi ve fi nish-
ers in fi fth.

Blake Sentman has been named a fi nalist for Johnny Carpenter
award, given annually to the Oregon 4A/3A/2A/1A male prep ath-
lete of the year. Last year the award went to Will Shaw of Yoncalla
while current Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert won the 5A-6A
award. The award will be handed out at the Tiger Woods Center on
the Nike campus in Beaverton, which will be hosted by Neil Everett
of ESPN.
“It’s nice to see all the hard work and time I’ve put in pay off. It’s
an honor to go,” Sentman said. He will play college basketball next
year for Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho.
Lane Community College has named a new interim track
coach. Brian Schaudt was appointed to a one-year, interim posi-
tion as track and fi eld coach.
Schaudt has been heavily involved in collegiate track and fi eld
in Eugene since his graduation as a student athlete from the Uni-
versity of Oregon in 2012. Since then he has spent time assisting
UO head coach Robert Johnson. Look for more in the next edi-
tion of The Sentinel.

ROB WARD
Rob loves the music he is playing! Rob invites you to tune in on Wednesdays,
call-in your requests and enjoy some great Rock ‘n Roll, Soul and Rhythm &
Blues tunes. Rob was born in San Francisco in 1954 and grew up listening to
KYA 1260 and KEWB 910, then later to KFRC 610. Rob formed his fi rst garage
band in 1966 as a 12- year-old, and continued with the same bandmates until
early 1969. If it was played on top 40 radio, Rob heard it. His love for 50s and
60s music continues today and he loves keeping the music of the 50s and 60s
alive, especially songs that should have been heard, but weren’t. When he’s not
spinning records at KNND, Rob ithe co-owner of Grill & Chill, “the little blue
box that rocks on the corner of 9th and Whiteaker”. He invites you to stop by
and say hi.
