Americorps serve in Elkton Community
On March, 27th a group of
seven young adults, aged 18-24,
started work at Elkton Com-
munity Education Center. The
team, known as Silver 6, is
currently completing a year of
service for AmeriCorps Nation-
al Civilian Community Corps
(NCCC) and will be serving
with the center until May 16th,
2017.
Silver 6 is assisting Elkton
Education Community Center
(ECEC) in realizing their mis-
sion of creating a cultural, edu-
cational and social oasis for all
ages in rural Oregon. The center
provides learning opportunities
for the community through their
multi-purpose space which in-
cludes, among other attractions:
a library, a native plant garden, a
historic replica of Fort Umpqua,
and a butterfl y pavilion.
Silver 6 is helping ECEC
complete a number of projects
that span all of their attractions.
In the time they’ve been there,
Silver 6 has been able to con-
struct a new fence for the cen-
ter’s preschool, install a French
drain system for their outdoor
amphitheater, and paint the fa-
cility’s building. ECEC plans
to utilize Silver 6’s with other
large projects such as planting
a demonstrative milkweed bed
and creating an educational
plant identifi cation signage sys-
tem.
"We're so excited to have the
team at ECEC. They are help-
ing us expand our native plant
nursery, increase butterfl y habi-
tat and complete environmental
restoration projects in the area,
so their impact will be felt for
years to come," said Marjory
Hamann, the executive director
at ECEC.
The AmeriCorps Nation-
al Civilian Community Corps
(NCCC) and its FEMA Corps
units engage 2,800 young
Americans in a full-time,
10-month commitment to ser-
vice each year. AmeriCorps
NCCC members address criti-
cal needs related to natural and
other disasters, infrastructure
improvement, environmental
stewardship and conservation,
and urban and rural develop-
ment. For more information,

preparing them. We will sample
hot and cold teas, vinegar and
alcohol tinctures, and non-al-
