COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL May 24, 2017 3B An incredible night of racing for Gran Fondo hits Main St. Armed Forces Night 72 cars entered the pits May 20th for what would be an incredible night of racing for Armed Forces Night. The sun was shining bright and the driv- ers were all hungry for a win, making for some great battles on the dirt! The wingless sprint tour made their fi rst appearance of the year at Cottage Grove Speedway. Rob Lindsay was quick time of the night with a 13.698. James Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Races were won by Lindsay and Kyle Miller. Ricky Ashley and Tim Alberding found themselves on the front row of the Dot’s Trophy Shop Dash and Ashley took home the hardware. Mill- er and Lindsay shared the front row for the 30-lap main event, Lindsay got the early lead and held it for 8 laps before Miller took over the top spot and weaved in and out of lap traffi c with ease until fi nally seeing the checkers. Lindsay was 2nd, Ashley 3rd, Alberding 4th and Cooper Desbiens rounded out the top 5. Crockers Cars added money to the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifi ed class and it brought out a whopping 26 cars looking for that extra cash! Craig Hanson secured the fastest lap of qualifying with a 14.926 earning a spot in the Dot’s Trophy Dash along with Monte Bischoff, Mark Wauge, and Matthew Draeger. Draeger would go on to win the dash. There were side by side battles throughout the entire fi eld for all 25 laps but when the checkered fl ag fl ew it would be Williamson over Ashley, Ray earning that extra Crockers Cars bonus money. Draeger and Towns fi nished out the top 5. The IMCA Sportmods continued to be the class that keeps growing and improv- ing. Jorddo Braaten was quick time of the night with a very quick 15.409. Daniel Ray and Mike Medel were victorious in the James Heating & Air Conditioning Heat Races and the Dot’s Trophy Shop Dash Trophy went home with Chris Frisbie. Frisbie continued to lead until the fi rst caution of the race sent him to the back of the fi eld for the restart, that put Daniel Ray in the top spot where he stayed for the remainder of the race ultimately being the fi rst repeat winner of the year. Braaten ended up 2nd followed by Bud- dy McHargue, Shawn Hand, and Medel. The Quality RV Hornet race was once again a great show with 15 drivers fi ghting it out. James Heating & Air Condi- tioning Heat Races were won by Trissell and Dickenson, the dice roll was a 6 which would put them both in row 3. This year's event was MC'ed by former Tour de France rider Levi Leipheimer who jumped off the sideline with the riders but due to an injury, is pausing his professional career. In 2009, Leipheimer started his own Gran Fondo, which translates to "big ride" in Italian, in California. Before riders were asked to roll to the start line just before 8 a.m., they were given a strict warning: there is an injury every year. There's a hairpin turn that, if a car is climb- ing the turn at the same time, will kill you. A point to the medic tent, an instruction to have fun, and the riders were off. Escorted a few miles from down by Cottage Grove Police, the riders set off for the 177- mile ride that would take approximately six hours to fi nish. Riders who did not wish to complete the entire course were given the option of riding 71 miles and receiving a new bib that read "Have a nice day." With no spectator opportunities along the route, a sizeable crowd for 8 a.m. on a Sun- day turned out to cheer on riders on Main St. where they started just short of city hall. For more photos, please see The Sentinel's Snapshot page. Drain's standing earns them playing time North Douglas lost to Oakridge 9-4 in a game that would determine championship play. However, due to their standing, the team made it to the fi rst round and will play Reedsport.
